Fairly Frequently we are asked how to “restore that black and dirty cork handle on that favorite rod. Well, the best way we have found is really the simplest was well. We use 0000 gauge steel wool. You will be amazed just how good cork can look after rubbing it with the steel wool. But, be careful. Never use steel wool on a damp or wet rod unless black is one of your favorite colors. Never let the steel wool touch the blank as this will dull the finish. Once you have given the cork a good rub with the steel wool and there are some dark spots imbedded in the cork try some alcohol and a towel to complete the cleaning.
You will be amazed just how “new” that handle can look. But, please, use only 0000 gauge steel wool. Anything any courser will rub off too much cork and distort the handle profile.

Here’s a good warning to all of those who get up early, drive to the lake, fish hard, load the boat back on the trailer, and head home after a hard day’s fishing…….STAY AWAKE ON THE WAY HOME (no, we do not know who this was, but we understand the driver fell asleep. Yes, he was OK) |
