World’s BEST Fillet Knife Sale, New G. Loomis Rods, Stradic CI4-2500 Reels IN STOCK, Revos, and more info……….

Persistence paid off as Barry Battista caught this nice brown trout April 15th at Spring Lake in Florida just before dark on Tax Day, April 15, 2010. Barry says this shows it pay to do your taxes early! We agree!

Hi Folks,

You may not realize this, but there is a hidden specification on every fishing rod made. It’s unpublished and never advertised in any catalog or specification sheet, but it’s extremely important.

I never knew about this "undisclosed" specification until about 5 years ago. Dixie and I were flying into one of Davey and Michelle Beaushene’s pristine wilderness camps for a 5 days fishing trip. This time we happened to choose Clear Lake from their 12 outpost camps available. We had been into Clear before and loved the fact that just the two of us could fly into this picturesque wilderness and be the only people on this fantastic catch-and-release lake. We also liked the fact that we could portage into two other lakes, one of which contained lake trout. These options gave us walleye, northern, and lake trout all available in one trip on three different lakes.

We arrived at Davey and Michelle’s early Saturday morning and were eager to get airborne, soon to be escaping to our "private" lake. From past experience we knew that well within a 5 minute boat ride was a spectacular reef that often yielded walleye over 5 lbs. Frankly (I swear this is true) there we days that we had trouble catching fish small enough for dinner!

In no time our gear was stowed and my best fishing pal’s nephew, Mike Gate, had us and the turbo Otter in the air. Mike was a great pilot and had become a friend over the many years we had been fishing out of Nestor Falls Fly In Outposts. It was a real bonus that he was my fishing pal, Keith Gate’s, nephew. We regaled each other with fishing stories about Keith as the miles and clouds passed. Soon we were landing on Clear Lake, ready to do battle.

We unloaded the plane, helped load the outgoing guests gear, exchanged a few stories about past trips to Clear, and then bid Mike and his new passengers adieu. The lake was ours alone! Stow the food and gear, get our fishing rods and reels ready, and hit the lake. If there’s a better time on a fishing trip I don’t know what it is. The months of anticipation are over and we’re on the water and ready to catch some fish!

By 5 in the evening we decided to call it a day. This first abbreviated day we had caught no less than 60 or 70 nice walleye. And not even using live bait. We gave that up several years ago after we found out just how voracious these fish are. Gulp baits in worms, leeches, and twisters worked amazingly well, so why fool around with live bait. We had managed to catch 3 nice "dinner sized" walleye and in no time they were filleted and delivered to Dixie at the kitchen stove. Dinner was as good as any gourmet restaurant could possibly provide.

The next morning broke crisp and cloudless. Perhaps this would be a good day for taking a shot at some lake trout. After a lumberjack breakfast of hot cakes, bacon, eggs, and fresh black coffee we loaded our boat with all our gear and headed out to "the third lake" as we called it for some lakers.

Davey had boats in each portage lake, so all we really had to do was grab all of our gear out of our boat and follow the trail to the next lake. There awaiting us was a smaller boat and motor and can of gas. Load the gear and head up to the next portage. Now this one was a bit trickier as the approach was into a rapids which was all of 10 inches deep. Pushing with a paddle we finally managed to "park" our boat so the gear could once again be unloaded. The third lake was about ½ mile away down the trail which was now teeming with Canadian "big boy" mosquitoes. Definitely needed to proceed as quickly as possible to avoid any involuntary transfusions.

Once we reached the third boat we loaded and headed for the trout. This lake was about 95 feet deep, so lakers were here. We used our fish finder to get a lay of the land ( or water as was the case here). Soon enough we found the drop offs and were jigging for strikes. Now, as good as the walleye fishing is on these lakes the lake trout fishing is more challenging. The sun was beginning to warm things up as the morning breezes disappeared. Come on fish, bite!

Off and on for the next two hours we had some hits, but no fish. But no matter. Here we were on this gorgeous lake on a beautiful day with each other and God’s grace. But man does not live on love nor grace alone, so I suggested a fried walleye sandwich (made from last night’s leftovers) was in order. Dixie readily agreed and we both reeled in and sat our rods aside in favor of the cooler with sandwiches, pickles, and drinks inside.

First I moved back to the cooler and then Dixie repositioned. Soon each of us had our sandwich and were kicked back relaxing, each in a  collapsible boat seat we had brought. And then I made the discovery. Where was my rod? Not beside me, not alongside Dixie, and this was a small boat. "Is this your rod" I heard from the front.

How she managed to pull my rod out from under her bottom and still look quizzical is beyond me, but she did. What was held up for display had a new bend not normally designed into the rod. Matter of fact, my once medium-heavy, fast action rod now was more like a wimpy, overcooked noodle. Backbone? Broken. Stiffness? Past history. This rod was a goner.

Dixie still had that little girl look. I held the rod up. "It’s broken" I said in what, for me, was an extremely courteous and controlled response. Dixie apologized, not totally convinced she was the culprit but not having any other plausible explanation. Now I felt bad.

There were a few minutes of uncomfortable silence. Way too uncomfortable for vacation time. "You know what, I think I see what happened here", I said to get Dixie’s attention.

Now she perked up, expecting my many years of fishing expertise to absolve her of any responsibility relating to an obviously defective rod.

I moved back in the boat and saddled up next to her on the middle seat. "Here’s the deal. All quality fishing rods have an action rating, a power rating, a line range, and lure weight range."

"Oh, I didn’t know that", she said quickly.

I held the rod close so she could see this information prominently displayed on the blank just above the fore grip. She nodded and started smiling. Surely I was about to show skills comparable to Sherlock Holmes by deducing one of these ratings had been exceeded.

"Oh, there is one other rating on the rod and I’m sure that’s what caused this failure", I said. She leaned forward so she was sure to hear my explanation.

"See, right here it says ‘maximum butt weight 100 pounds’. I think this is what caused the problem"

Just the other day Dixie said she may reconsider and actually go fishing with me again. I figure as she’s gotten older her memory is getting cluttered and she may actually not remember why she stopped fishing with me about 5 years ago. I’m sure she remembers Clear Lake, but perhaps the rest is simply forgotten or at least fuzzy. That would be good.

Personally, I think the "hidden specification" on fishing rods is probably best kept confidential and only shared between us guys. No reason to alarm the ladies.

This newsletter we have some "breaking news" from G. Loomis regarding some new saltwater as well as freshwater rods,. New G. Loomis Saltwater and Freshwater Rods Soon to be Released…………………

We just got word that G. Loomis will be introducing 12 new saltwater rods and 12 new freshwater rods in May. The saltwater rods are all casting rods in the Pro Green (PGR) Series which was Rod Product of the Year at last year’s ICAST Fishing Tackle Trade Show. These new rods will be added to the 9 existing Pro Green Spinning Rods to make this series a full 21 different rods. The new casting rods are from 6’10" long to 7’4" long in mostly fast actions and from medium light to medium heavy powers.

When we first saw the Pro Green rods at last year’s ICAST we were truly impressed by their light weight, sensitivity, and tremendous power so we expect these new rods will be equally as impressive. They have great components and sure fill a need most of us saltwater flats guys have. I fished the Pro Green spinning rods last year around Apalachicola, Florida and found their performance to be far better than expected. I can’t wait for these new models!

The new freshwater rods are all 1 pc Trout Spin rods fitting nicely in

the G. Loomis Trout Spin (TSR) Series. There are 11 new models ranging from 4’8" to 7’6" long. All but one rod is ultra light power. Actions are from moderate fast to fast with lure weights from 1/32-1/8 up to 1/16-5/16 ounce. These are all 1 piece rods and all for spinning reels. With these additional rods the TSR series now has 19 models, 14 of which are ultra light power. This means that G. Loomis now has the largest selection of ultra light spinning rods offered in the world. Great news for all of us ultra light fishermen!

When the TSR series first came out about 18 months ago we were impressed with the upgraded components as well as the sensitivity and feather-light weight. No doubt these new rods will continue to exceed our expectations. Oh, I almost forgot. There will be two new GLX rods among these 11 new rod, bring the total GLX rods in the TSR series to 4. We can’t wait!

Next newsletter we will have all of the specifications and hopefully by then a full and complete inventory of every new rod. As soon as we receive these they will be on our web site as well as on display in the store. Stay tuned!

American Legacy Now Has ALL of Your Abu Garcia Revo Needs IN STOCK………………

Just in the last week we have received all of our Abu Garcia Revo inventory. Every Revo model available is in stock, including the impossible-to-get Skeet Reese in both right hand and left hand retrieve. But only a few of each!

We have been doing a lot of research over the last 9 or 10 months debating whether to carry this brand, but after some serious field testing we’re convinced these reels deserve a place on our shelves and meet our "world’s best fishing gear" objective. Wonderfully light in weight, responsive, and great feeling in your hand, these reels rock. We have a full complement of both right hand as well as left hand retrieve models.

Couple one of these well-made reels to a G. Loomis rod and you will be amazed at the overall balance as well as the world-class performance. Guess that’s to be expected from one of the oldest continuously operating fishing reel manufacturers in the world.

Donald took time away from his antique business to attend to more important business with his two little angels. Like we always say, "it’s never to early to start them fishing!"

Hi Folks,

Not too long ago I had a lesson in trust and what’s really important. This had to do with my all-time favorite rod and a fishing expedition for the ever elusive largemouth bass. Most of us have a favorite rod or reel. I do. I LOVE my old rod, but it very easily could have been lost for good not long ago. It was an interesting lesson in trust and perhaps faith.

We were in the panhandle of Florida with our middle daughter Jennifer, her husband Brad, and two of our "world class" grandkids, Michael Thomas who is almost 6 and Elyse who is 4. Now I know all grandparents have fabulous grandkids, but these two munchkins are just wonderful little vessels that absorb every experience with so much enthusiasm and energy that they really make any trip or contact a memorable experience.

Brad and Jennifer have a vacation home around Destin, Florida. No, it’s not on the water, but instead on a gorgeous golf course that has many, many lakes fully stocked with Florida bass that have an insatiable appetite for anything that moves. Just behind their home is a small lake that no one would ever suspect holds anything of much size. I certainly didn’t.

Mickey T ( "MT") and grandpa, dad, and Elsie (as I call her) had decided it was time to learn the fine art of casting with an open face spinning reel. So, I brought along a couple of not-very-expensive spinning outfits to use as introductory tools to this fine art. We had some Megabass X-100 lures with 6 lb test mono line and a heck of a lot of enthusiasm from all participants.

Brad had a "better" outfit and I had my all time favorite rod, my 25+ year old Shakespeare President 5 ft light spinning rod, sporting my very first Shimano Stella 1000 reel. I tell you, I just love this rod! It’s just 5 ft long with a wee small handle but it has a lot of stories to tell. I caught an 11 lb northern pike on this rod years ago in Canada in what had to be one of the greatest fish fights ever. The northern did no less than 3 totally-out-of-the-water jumps along with two "reverse" runs that zoomed under the boat. It took 20 minutes to land this fish using this rod and 4 lb test line. It was a thrill!

So at water’s edge on a golf course in northern Florida here we were teaching these two kids how to cast. We had these little Megabass lures and in no time MT was throwing like a pro. Elsie was struggling, but not from lack of trying. Soon enough though, even my golden haired little darling had it down pretty good. In short order all four of us were throwing at whatever lurked below.

Suddenly I had a hit! I mean, a big hit. My little 5 ft rod bent over and the 6 lb line started running out the drag. It must have been the "whoa" that came out of my mouth that got everyone’s attention. Brad stopped reeling, Elsie stared, and MT dropped his rod and reel so he could run at warp speed to see what grandpa had hooked into.

This was not a small fish. I reeled and the drag kept running off. Then MT uttered the words that temporarily rendered me stupid, "Grandpa, can I reel it in?"

"Sure, why not?" I said without giving it a second thought as I handed the rod and reel to my wide eyed grandson. And it was at this moment that two things happened simultaneously: MT realized that catching and landing a fish were not necessarily the same thing and I realized my favorite rod and reel outfit could quite possibly end up at the bottom of a lake, having easily slipped out of small, 5 year old’s hands. What was I thinking?

Immediately I went into "coach" mode; that’s where you try to encourage as well as instruct, all at the same time. "Keep the line tight, rod tip up, GRIP that handle (oh, please grip that handle), move up the bank just a little, watch the tree, rod tip up!"

MT reeled in jerky spurts. The fish wasn’t giving up. I started seeing panic in my grandson’s face. His elfin smile turned to a frown and his teeth were gritting with fatigue. I kept coaching, knowing that any direct help from either his dad or me would negate future bragging rights should he manage to land this fish. It seemed like this fish was supercharged with unbelievable endurance. Could MT hold on?

This is where trust and faith start conflicting with sentiment and habit. I knew I had done the right thing and now I had to simply trust that decision and have faith everything would be OK. But, I had so many good memories from that little rod. Whenever I went fishing I always took this rod. It didn’t matter if the fish were too big. Maybe I could use the rod to fish for bait. "Keep working it Mickey T, you can do it!"

And do it he did! Other than grandpa and dad scooting the fish up on the bank, MT landed this beauty. All 6 lbs, 7 oz. of largemouth. MT had a smile from ear to ear and was literally vibrating with more excitement than Christmas. What seemed like an hour was in fact just a few minutes. But it will always be remembered in my grandson’s mind as the time he caught his first MONSTER fish and in his grandpa’s mind as the time he realized what was really important and what was not so important.

Yes, I still have my little rod and still love to use it. But if any of my grandkids really wants to take it fishing it will be sitting in the corner, ready to go. I just hope they come back with some stories and a memory or two tied to this little rod. I know I sure have.

Featured "Select" Megabass at 50% off While Supplies Last………..

When we first took on Megabass a couple of years ago we put almost every lure and every lure color in stock. I was totally impressed with some of the bigger, wooden lures as well as almost any lure I figured would be good musky bait. So, price be darned, we ordered up. Problem was at between $40 and $100 these lures didn’t exactly fly off the shelf.

I’m still convinced that I will hit some BIG fish with some of these lures this summer, but our numbers guy, Jack the accountant, says a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush (I wonder where he came up with that). I think he means sell these at a discount to get them off the shelf. That’s exactly what we are doing. We’ve marked this select group of Megabass Lures (not all Megabass lures) at 50% OFF!! This select group includes all

X-120, Scream-X, Scream-X Double Prop, Scream X Jr., Scream X Orca, IT-JACK, Limberlamber, RAT-X, and Dorum-All sizes. All are current models that we simply have too many of. Our loss (believe me, these are below our cost) is your gain.

All of this group are so darn pretty that it’s almost a shame to get teeth marks on them, but at these prices they’re one of the best deals in Megabass today. Once again, our supply is Very Limited. First Come, First Served. When they’re gone…..they’re gone. No backorders, no rain checks. Gone. Click on the lure model above to see what’s available. The prices you see Reflect 50% off our regular low price, which most of you know is the lowest available anywhere as it is. Act Now or Forever Be Kicking Yourself!

Save $100 on ABU Garcia Revo Reel, NEW G. Loomis Rods, More Deals, and more……….

This is an AWESOME zander (walleye) caught by Gunther van Ginneken in Belgium. This monster was 40 inches long and 20 lbs! Gunther credits his G. Loomis CR663 with handling and eventually landing this fish. Everyone who has seen this picture simply says "WOW!!!" We agree100%. Wow!

Hi Folks,

Faith. Hope. Charity. Great virtues. Easter weekend is probably the perfect time to consider these and just how important they are, especially in today’s world. I’ve been thinking about these quite a bit this week and probably philosophizing far more than I need to, but sometimes I think we simply forget about what is really important. So I’d like to add a little more food for thought.

From an early Sunday school class many, many years ago before I was in my teens I remember a teacher telling the class, "If you practice faith, hope, and charity then all you need to do is remember ‘H.O.T.’ and you’ll be fine. Better yet, remember ‘H.O.T.T.’ and you will be exceptional." You know, it’s been so long ago that I can’t remember if that Sunday school teacher was a man or a woman or even which church I was attending when I heard this. You see, Dad and Mom always seemed to move into a different house about every 3 years, so we were always making new friends and attending a different school and church fairly frequently. Dad fancied himself as a part-time real estate mogul who had a perfect sense of timing regard the highs and lows of the local housing market. So we moved…and moved…and moved.

My sister and I were often fighting with each other, usually over the most mundane and silly stuff. That seemed to keep Mom both busy and frustrated. Dad, unlike Mom, would pretty much ignore this sibling rivalry, preferring instead to let Mom do the refereeing and dispense punishment. But Dad’s "fuse" was only so long.  Heaven help you if that bomb went off! There is justice and then there is "Dad justice". That wasn’t pretty. It was ugly and immediate.

Anyway, sometime in between these multiple house changes I attended this "life changing" Sunday school class. Before this class Sunday school was just part of our Sunday routine. Mom and Dad would go to the worship service, my sister and I would go to our respective Sunday school classes. Now what I heard in that one class didn’t sink in immediately, but soon enough I was determined to start practicing not just H.O.T., but the much more important and, I later determined, far more difficult H.O.T.T. And so I did.

Now, the fights didn’t stop completely, but they almost did. My outlook, even if I was still in grade school, changed. Maybe it was time, maybe it was H.O.T.T. Certainly this was more than simply my coming of age. No, this was profound advice and counsel from my Sunday school teacher with perhaps slightly increased maturity on my part. The more I practiced it, the better I got.

So, what is H.O.T.T. you ask? Simply put it is Hope, Optimism, Trust, and Tolerance. I still try to practice this today and no, I haven’t got it perfected yet. But I try. And I always think just how different the world would be if every one of us would really dedicate ourselves to these four simple virtues along with faith and charity. Perhaps this Easter is a good time to sit back and think about this. And even try it. I can tell you that it will make your life far better. Me? I can’t even imagine what my life would have been like without it. Or if me and my sister would even still be on this earth if dad’s fuse had had a serious melt down. Thanks, H.O.T.T. + F + C!

BREAKING G. LOOMIS NEWS! New Rods at G. Loomis Will Set a NEW BENCHMARK………………….

If you visit the G. Loomis web site at www.gloomis.com you’ll see that the home page makes reference to "it took 17 years to build this rod." They’re teasing you! But the new G. Loomis rod material and a group of revolutionary new rods is no joke. It’s awesome! Loomis has taken rod blank design to a completely new level with the introduction of the "Blank X" material (no word on what the official designation will be yet). Currently there are plans for 16 fly rods and 14 of the most popular bass casting and/or spinning rods. 20% lighter than the current top-of-the-line GLX material. More sensitivity than GLX. Split grips on all 14 of the bass casting and/or spinning rods. Premium components right down to the highest grade cork Loomis has ever used on a rod. And every one of these new casting and spinning rods comes with a custom rod sock. Fly rods will, of course, include a G. Loomis rod sock and G. Loomis hard case.

The new blanks are a result of a completely new blank manufacturing process that utilizes not only a proprietary higher modulus graphite material, but an entirely new proprietary resin as well. This produces a rod blank that is about 25% stronger (more powerful) than the current GLX blanks. Because the resin penetrates the graphite sheet completely and creates an extremely hard outer surface these new "Blank X" rods will resist scratching, cracking, and be more impact resistant than any rod currently produced.

Now, least you think this is about "it" there is one other huge improvement included in these revolutionary rods. The guide train on the spinning  and casting rods is unlike any ever seen in the market and is the most efficient ever installed on a rod. We haven’t been told the details, but you can bet that this will also be a "first". And isn’t that what has driven G. Loomis for over 28 years?

Details on the fly rods are still not available other than we do know the rods will include trout, spey, and saltwater. If you consider the decreased weight, added sensitivity, and greater power of this new material there can be little doubt that these new rods will be just as innovative as the new casting and spinning rods. We hope to have additional details as they are made available to us.

So, what does all this mean to the fisherman? Our best guess is that you will have a rod that balances better with the new, lighter, higher performance top-end reels whether they be casting, spinning, or fly. Although specific details are unknown, we assume the new guide train in the casting and spinning rods will increase casting distance as well as accuracy while decreasing casting effort ( a great feature for older fishermen such as yours truly).

Right now plans are for these 30 new rods to be introduced at the tackle dealer trade show, ICAST, in the middle of July, 2010. If past practice is any indication we should have these new rods in stock by mid to late August. Naturally newsletter subscribers will be notified as soon as we start receiving stock.

We can only speculate on pricing, but our estimate is that the spinning and casting rods will be in the $450 to $550 price range. Our best guess on the fly rods is that these rods will rods will start at around the $700 range. But, as we said, this is pure speculation at this time.

Finally, we want to again reiterate that every G. Loomis rods is made exclusively in Woodland, Washington USA. These 30 new rods are no exception. Although the details we have outlined above are by no means specific, we are very proud that American innovation is obviously alive and well in Woodland, Washington. Bravo to the entire G. Loomis team for continuing to be the benchmark by which all other rods are measured!

We Now Gladly Accept PayPal ~ Worldwide…………..

We mentioned this last newsletter, but it bears repeating once more. American Legacy Fishing Company now gladly accepts PayPal on our web site as well as for our Ebay items. PayPal’s unique design means you will never have to give a merchant your credit card details. It’s a great way to pay while making sure you protect your identity from identity theft. It takes almost no time to sign up and can be used both for paying as well as receiving funds. If you’re not already a PayPal user just go to www.paypal.com and sign up.

Buy on Ebay, Pay MORE on EBay?…………………………

We know that many of you have found us through our Ebay Store. We’re glad you did and certainly appreciate your patronage. But, we would really like to encourage you to buy from our web site or come in our store if you have a choice. The selection is better and we can work with you better. You should also be aware of some "simple truths" regarding Ebay. Very often prices on Ebay are Higher than they would be in a retail store or on a web site, especially in Ebay "Stores". We try to minimize this, but there can be slight differences.

Often times merchandise on Ebay is closeouts, seconds, or otherwise "less than 100%" goods. WE DO NOT DEAL in any product that is not first quality. No seconds or rejects. We do end up with some models that become obsolete or are discontinued and find Ebay one way to dispose of these items. But, we do our best to offer these at prices below Ebay on our web site. After all, there is no Ebay commission involved.

Fees that Ebay sellers pay typically exceed 10% of the SELLING price of an item when sold on Ebay. If you then pay with PayPal (an EBay company) this costs sellers another 3%. So, by the time you have checked out and paid with PayPal a seller such as us will have paid Ebay/PayPal as much as 13% of the selling price in commission. Obviously if we sell an item in our retail store or on our web site there is no commission and we try to pass this savings on to our customers.

Another misconception is that if you buy on Ebay you have a better chance of returning an item should there be a problem. This may be true with some sellers, but our "30-day-no-questions-asked" return policy applies equally on any venue where you may buy from us. We also prefer to have you contact us at sales@gloomis.us rather than through the Ebay message system. Simply put, we know when you send us a message at our email address it will reach us immediately and we will be able to respond quicker than one sent through Ebay.

So, if possible use our web site and contact us using sales@gloomis.us. No problem going through Ebay or contacting through them, but we want you to experience the best service and our most competitive price. This very often isn’t possible through Ebay.

Huge UPDATED Trade-In List, 25% Off Selected Loomis, Rumors, PayPal, and Lots More…..

John Salazar sends us this picture of just one of 50 redfish caught in South Louisana about 2 weeks ago. This year Lousiana has been the "Red Kingdom" for sure!

Hi Folks,

Let me tell you about the great lake trout rout. Ever had the "world’s worst day fishing" while everyone around you was reeling them in? Same lures, same fishing technique, same everything. Nothing worked. I mean n-o-t-h-i-n-g. Zilch. Nada. Zip. Well, let me tell you about the great lake trout rout.

We were fishing in Crow Lake just north of Nestor Falls, Ontario. This is one absolutely beautiful lake. Crystal clear where you can see down to 15-20 ft when the wind is light. Cold. Very, very cold. And deep. Lots of drop offs and reefs. Lake trout, smallmouth’s,

and big musky.

We put in about 8 AM that pleasantly warm August morning and within 15 minutes were showing lake trout stacked near the bottom "like cordwood" (as Keith liked to say) on the old paper graph. Using 6 ½ ft medium heavy casting rods and Shimano Calcutta’s

we would press the line release and let these 1 ½ oz football jigs free fall to the bottom and then reel up fast.

My buddy Keith and I along with my oldest daughter’s boyfriend Mark (who was a cracker jack fisherman) were dropping jigs down to 80-100 ft and quickly reeling them back up. The lake trout would hit on the retrieve like a runaway freight train. Set the

hook! Set the hook again. And again. Hard!

By noon Keith and I each had caught about 8 to 10 trout ranging in weight from 5 lbs to 12 lbs. And the boyfriend Mark? Zip. His face soon became distorted and I’m he suspected we were doing something radically different. But we weren’t. We brought him with us so he could experience the thrill of a "freight train" strike down 100 ft that could

easily pull the rod right out of your hands. What the heck was going on?

Keith and I both took turns scrutinizing Mark’s technique. How he was holding his rod,

ow quick he was reeling up, even how high (or low) he held his rod. We looked at everything we possibly could. We changed fishing positions in the boat. We even quit fishing intermittently so he had the hole to himself. But still no hits, no fish. As soon as Keith and I started fishing again the trout hit, sometimes one on each of our lines at the same time. But Mark was still in the zero column.

Now getting skunked is not new to any fisherman. We all experience days like that even when we drawn deply into the depths of our fishing knowledge. It just happens. But this was simply weird. The fish were down there. Keith and I were having what could best be described as one of our best lake trout days ever, and we fish together for years. But poor Mark was totally frustrated, but trying so hard.

Finally, after our "score" was over 30 lakers we switched rods with Mark. First Keith handed his over to him and fished Mark’s rod. Now you know this is coming…..Keith catches the largest lake trout of the day on the third drop using Mark’s rod! Mark? Still zip. So I switch rods with him. No, I didn’t catch one even bigger, but neither did Mark. Still Mark = 0

This scenario went on all afternoon. We rechecked Mark’s technique, measured his retrieve speed, checked his hands for grease or some foreign substance, asked if he was wearing cologne, had him stand and then sit, change positions in the boat, sing "Here Little Fishy", dance a jig with his finger in his ear. You name it, we tried it. In 40 years of fishing I had just never seen anything like this. And I hope I never will again.

By 5 PM we were done and heading back to the cabin. Final score: Keith 24 lakers, me

20 lakers, Mark zero. It was sad. We arrived back at the cabin where my oldest daughter was eager to hear about her boyfriend’s great fishing expedition and Mark’s anticipated success over two older guys. Keith looked at me, I looked at Keith, we both looked at Mark. And laughed!

Now old guys can do this, but Mark was just about 20 years old at this time and took

this pretty hard. My daughter looked at both Keith and I very suspiciously. Had we "set him up"? That was so cruel. What had gotten in to us? Two old guys picking on the "kid". We should "be ashamed" she scolded. But hey, we didn’t do anything! We really wanted him to catch ALL the fish.

To this day I have never figured that day out. It was impossible to understand. Every once in a while Keith and I would retell this tale and shake our heads years later – and laugh. Never saw anything like it since. Keith passed away a few years ago and I sure miss my pal. I don’t think I ever spent more time in a boat with anyone more than I did with Keith. Our daughter broke up with Mark. It wasn’t over the fishing trip (I don’t think). She may remember Mark, but I doubt the "lake trout rout".

Life goes on, but every once in a while something happens that you just can’t forget, or maybe don’t want to. This was one of those experiences that has stayed with me ever since. And there are a lot more. Most having to do with fishing and the fun and

itement that accompany this great sport. Any day on the water always has the potential to create memories that will last a lifetime. Even if those memories are as unexplainable as this one was.

Our G. Loomis 25% off sale is still on. Plenty of great stuff, especially some top end GLX fly rods and Loomis Luggage. We’ve also addressed the many rumors that seem to have popped out of the woodwork concerning G. Loomis. Be sure to read this article. We also have some other info that we think you will enjoy. And as always, we thank all of you for being the world’s best customers and friends!

G. Loomis RUMORS and The TRUTH………………..

Ever since G. Loomis rods became scarce and in short supply starting around October, 2008 the "rumor mill" has been rampant with all sorts of misinformation, most claiming to have come from "reliable" industry sources. Whatever could be imagined regarding Loomis seemed plausible and often possible as rod supplies became scarce and communication from Loomis even more scarce. Sort of the perfect storm for the rumor mills to build on.

Well, enough is enough. It’s time to set the record straight and dispel all of the junk that is being disseminated on blogs, in tackle shops, and between others who pass on rumor as fact. Although we are in no way owned or controlled by G. Loomis, American Legacy Fishing is pretty close to G. Loomis since our very existence is tied to this brand. Hardly a day goes by where

we haven’t had a discussion or exchanged emails regarding G. Loomis with folks at the G. Loomis Woodland, Washington factory or the parent company, Shimano. So take a few minutes to read this article so you will know the facts

rather than the fiction.

First and foremost, EVERY G. Loomis rod is still made and will continue to be made in Woodland, Washington. This is the ONLY place Loomis rods have been or are made.

The blanks for every rod are 100% USA made in this plant. No Loomis rod

has ever been made any place else. Nor has there ever been a G. Loomis rod made with blanks from anywhere except Woodland, Washington. More important, we have been assured that no Loomis rod will be made any place else.

Shimano did not just recently buy G. Loomis, but has owned this company for almost 13 years. As far as we know, Shimano has never dictated to G. Loomis what rods to make or how they were to be made. Moreover, the proprietary G. Loomis manufacturing technology has continually been improved over the years to address the evolving needs of fishermen. New rods that will be introduced this year are once again innovative and  "all Loomis".

The G. Loomis warranty has always been honored and will continue to be as it always

has. Your G. Loomis rod and it’s Limited Lifetime Warranty is as good today as it was when you bought the rod. When loomis was updating their manufacturing plant between

late 2008 and the middle of last year some rods sent in for warranty were indeed out of stock and warranty replacements were oftentimes backordered for several weeks if not months, but EVERY legitimate G. Loomis warranty claim was honored. The G. Loomis

warranty has not changed.

Effective December 1, 2009 the G. Loomis customer service department, marketing, accounting, and various other departments were moved to Shimano headquarters in Irvine, CA to better consolidate Shimano’s North American operations that include G. Loomis, Power Pro Braided Line, and Shimano. This also allowed the Woodland, Washington plant to focus on design, innovation, and timely delivery. At the same time

the Shimano sales force took over field representation for the G. Loomis and Power Pro brands. Since this consolidation new equipment has been added in Woodland and overall quality has improved making G. Loomis an even better product than the standard bearer it has been in the past.

Loomis is reorganizing their entire marketing program and as such may not be present at some events that we or our customers think they should have a presence at. We believe his is a temporary situation and soon you will see Loomis at many fishning events and shows. Present lack of attendance by Loomis is due to this reorganization, nothing

else.

Neither G. Loomis nor Shimano have ever been in any financial distress. Shimano is a

very strong company with worldwide sales well over $2 billion annually. They are profitable and continue to innovate, encourage, and support product development in all of their companies including G. Loomis, Power Pro, Pearl Izumi, Shimano, etc.

As most of you know, we addressed the name "Loomis-Franklin" in an earlier newsletter. There is no connection whatsoever between G. Loomis and Loomis-Franklin, a product that is manufactured in Asia and distributed in parts of Asia, Europe,

and Australia.

Efective in 2010 G. Loomis has decided to NOT publish a paper catalog, but instead offer their catalog on a redesigned web site where customers will have the ability to download the complete catalog or whatever pages they deem appropriate.

Unfortunately this new web site is as yet not operable. We at American Legacy Fishing are disappointed about this, but are certain it will be up soon. Until then we are always available to assist with any questions or information you may need.

Finally, the association between G. Loomis and American Legacy Fishing Company is that of

independently owned G. loomis dealer and the manufacturer of the G. Loomis products, which is a division of Shimano North America. We, like all dealers, are bound by the policies set forth by G. Loomis/Shimano. We have no financial interest in G. Loomis/Shimano nor do they have any interest in American Legacy Fishing Company. We are both independent companies. That said, we enjoy a wonderful relationship with "the factory" and share a common interest in promoting the world’s best fishing rods and accessories as well as the wonderful sport of fishing.

Hopefully this information will be as eagerly passed on as many of the rumors from the past. If you have any questions or concerns both American Legacy Fishing Company and G. Loomis/Shimano will be happy to address them.

“World’s Best Fishing Gear – World’s Best Service”

FREE G. LOOMIS HAT is BACK, SPRING TUNE-UPS for YOUR GEAR, Lots More….

Big Bas 10lb 14oz
Kevin Connell says it was a blue sky, 45 degree air, 64 degree water, only the insane would be out. I’m not so sure. This 10 lb 14 oz Florida Bass would sure get me on the water even in these conditions. Caught on Sunday, 1-10-2010 Fishing instead of reading our newsletter! Awesome fish, Kevin!

Hi Folks,

Oh boy! I just gathered up all of my fishing reels and rods last night and am about to start on my annual “spring tune up”. No, it’s not spring here yet, but in a few weeks it will be warming in Florida and Texas and other areas that hold some BIG bass. Okeechobee, Lake Fork, and some other prime areas will be calling none too soon. Time to get the boat polished, the engine tuned, trailer gone over, and all the “weapons” in perfect working order.

Every year I do this it seems the number of rods and reels multiply substantially. I know I didn’t add that much last year. It just “happens”. And I don’t know how. This is the time of year my wife of 44 years starts to question just how many fishing outfits one person needs. Not to be caught too far off guard, I quickly point out need is not the sole criteria here (I’ve yet to come up with just what is), just as it is not necessarily the sole criteria for women purchasing shoes. As you might guess, I am now on very “thin ice” with my bride.

But let’s be honest here, just how many pair of shoes does one woman need? Long, long ago our small closet was taken over by a rainbow of colorful ladies shoes of various models and purpose. They are on the floor, on the shelves, on top of the upper deck….everywhere. Maybe I’m the only guy wondering about this phenomenon, but I doubt it. Some of my buddies have cautiously eluded to similar confusion, but only very quietly and only after they are sure the person they confide in is to be trusted. My take: women are very sensitive about their shoes….very, very sensitive.

Oops, I’m getting off track here. Rods and reels. Right. Every year I bring all my gear into the family room, turn on the television, tune to a football game (this weekend there are the NFC and AFC playoffs – perfect!), and start cleaning, lubing, polishing, and putting new line on all of my reels. I clean the cork on my rods, check the guides and inserts, make sure the reel seat is Ok, and generally do all I can to make sure I’m ready to bolt out the door on less than 30 seconds notice whenever my buddies call about a trip.

Back to the shoes. Does anyone know why women need so many pairs of shoes? I honestly think my bride has more shoes than she has dresses to match them to. Imelda Marcos of Indiana. Pointy toes, flat toes, no toes, high tops, low tops, sandals, flip flops, loafers, high heels, low heels, no heels. Wow, I never realized just how extensive of a “collection” was setting there in the closet. I swear there are shoes in boxes that have never been worn. Perhaps we have identified a key psychological weakness here. But she’s such a great wife!

Then there are the purses. I’ll bet she has………………………..

OK, I’m back. I have been told I am way off track, way out of line, and need to stick to business. Who knew Dixie could read from that far away? Anyway, we have some great information for you in this newsletter and are bringing the “Free G. Loomis Hat” deal back as well. We hope you are all doing great and ready for another fabulous year of fishing enjoyment and memories. I know we are.

Tight Lines,

Tom Ashby

SPRING TUNE-UP IDEAS……………

Ardent: How could we start anyplace else? Ardent makes some wonderful products that are simply “must haves” at this time of year. The best deal we have seen is the Ardent Reel Kleen Cleaning Kit ($19.99) or Ardent Saltwater Reel Kleen Cleaning Kit ($29.99) You get everything you need to clean and lube those reels. Cleaner, Oil, Grease, brush, screwdriver, etc. All in a nice stowable plastic case.

New this year is the Reel Kleen Professional Parts Cleaning System for those of you who do some major maintenance. This little kit is perfect for cleaning reel parts so you can give them a better inspection. This sells for $29.99 and is well worth the investment. Includes a parts tub, wire basket, 8 oz of Reel Kleen Cleaner, a cloth and brush.

Ardent oils, grease, cleaners, lubes, and corrosion inhibitor are all available separately as well. Just search our web site under the search word Ardent to see the entire select or simply click here.

Sunline: Those of you who have been subscribed to our newsletter very long already know how we feel about the Sunline fishing line products. In our mind there just isn’t anything that is equal. We love the Sunline Super FC Sniper fluorocarbon line for it’s unusual softness yet high strength and durability. The Super Natural monofilament line is far better than any other we have found. The Metan fluoro lines still amaze us as they disappear when in the water. Add the Defier mono that cast a mile and the Machine Gun Cast mono and you have one of the most complete and technical selection of lines in the world.

And starting in late 2009 we, and Sunline, added a complete assortment of saltwater lines and leaders. Rock Spirit for rockfish, grouper, etc., Sterling II for trout and salmon, and Siglon F non-fading colored mono. Leaders? Boy, we have them now! System Leader FC100 for super PE lines, System Shock Leader, Big Game Shock Leader, and Taper Shock Leader Nylon. All wonderful and All In Stock.

Our Custom 40 Rod Rack w/G. Loomis Stickers: Once you have everything ready to go get organized! Better yet, Stay Organized!

This ALL WOOD Rod Rack is ours alone. ALL WOOD (no laminates or particle board here), rotating, and able to accommodate 40 rods or about 20 combos. We even include 2 G. Loomis decals so you can “customize” it. How good are these? Well, we use them here in the store in our showroom. These All Wood Rod Racks look GREAT, work perfectly, and will Last Generations. At $159.99 which includes 2 – G. Loomis decals they are no doubt one of the best rod rack deals ever.

Stick Jacket: Speaking of organization, here’s something that is practical and a “must have” for all of my “organized better than I will ever be” friends and customers. The first thing your Stick Jacket does is protect that expensive rod better than anything we have ever seen. But to those who thrive on being well organized, think about this: These come in 8 colors. So, you can have your crankbait rods in one color Stick Jacket, your spin jig rods in a different color, your jig & worm rods in a different color…Get the picture? I’m not this organized so I just use Stick Jackets to protect my rods. With the top brass eye that comes on every Stick Jacket I can also hang them from cup hooks in the garage since my two rod racks (above) are full! Yes, my wife is VERY aware of this…..

NEW PRODUCTS…………..

Man, I really want to tell you about some new stuff that we have in the pipeline. But, it’s not here in stock so I’m biting my tongue until our next newsletter. I mean, we have some great stuff coming in. You will be so excited. I know I can’t wait. There are at least 3 new lines that for now no one else really has here in the USA.

Hey, be sure you’re signed up for the newsletter and our mailing list. This is the only way you’ll be the first to get the news. Pass this on to your pals and be sure they sign up as well. You know from past experience how great our deals are when we have them and how short they last. Sign up here NOW or just email us at sales@gloomis.us with the word “Newsletter” in the subject.
