The day before Christmas Eve we welcomed our new puppy, Emma, to our home. If you recall from our earlier newsletters Emma is one of the puppies born at the same time our 13 year old golden retriever Jessie slipped away. Emma is now 10 weeks old and a bundle of fur, love, joy, and awkwardness. Although she will never replace our beloved Jessie, she’s pretty special. Our 11 month old Hanna (a white golden retriever) has found a new playmate. Emma may see Hanna as more of a challenge than a playmate. We have already had some loud, painful yipes from both. Emma’s “needle teeth” vs. Hanna’s 50 lbs. Fun to watch.
With our first real snow this last Wednesday Emma had the chance to experience real winter for the first time. I don’t know about you, but “first experiences”, whether they be with our kids, grandkids, or in this case our puppy, are wonders to behold. There’s just such a marvelous innocence and honest awe with our kids or pets that makes these very, very special moments.
And Emma did not disappoint. Her first reaction was wide eyed wonder as she walked out the front door and stood on the porch. Then we had apprehension, caution, investigation, exploration, confirmation, and finally elation. What a wonderful moment. Our innocent puppy discovering snow for the first time. And in that moment I think Dixie and I discovered once again just how beautiful a child’s innocence and honesty is, whether that child be one of our own, a grandchild, or a little puppy like Emma. True beauty is found in the simplest of acts or situations.
As you might expect, Emma is now firmly entrenched into the Ashby household and quickly discovering many new things. Things such as the tassels on my favorite pair of loafers (since removed), the support slats under our mattress (teething material for sure), the corners of some of our furniture (I will wait to touch up), and worst of all, Dixie’s hair brush (since disassembled). The only thing she seems NOT to have discovered is the newspaper for potty training. But, we’re working on that.
And so it is in the middle of this southern Indiana winter we are being entertained by a puppy and her antics and innocence. I like that. She gives us unqualified love in infinite quantities. The best gift she can possibly offer. Just like Jessie…
Fishing here is a challenge for now, but in no time we’ll be back on the water. Until then we’re cleaning and lubing our gear and getting everything ready for the first warm breeze we feel. G. LOOMIS NEWS………………..
2010 Catalogs: Although we very much disagree with the decision, G. Loomis will no longer be printing any catalogs. Starting in 2010 all Loomis catalogs will be in an electronic format (i.e. internet or DVD) which is great if you have electricity and a DVD player or access to the Internet. Not so great if you don’t. As of December 1, 2009 we are in the 2010 model year. Small problem is that the electronic catalog media is not ready yet. Hmmmm, seems that the best laid plans of mice and men…….well, you know the rest. We have been told the “new” Loomis web site will be “up” by the middle of February. We assume they mean February 2010, but that’s just an assumption. What to do? Well, we list EVERY CURRENT G. Loomis rod on our web site, so if you have electricity and internet access you can see every G. Loomis rod and accessory. If you do not we will be happy to send you a 2009 Loomis catalog along with a 2010 model addendum (our creation) while supplies last.
Sweatshirts (Hoodies): Finally, these are back in stock in all sizes. Both the Charcoal and the Brown Loomis sweatshirts are available and can ship immediately. If you tried to order one of these during the Christmas season you know we (along with every other Loomis dealer) were out. After having had this happen last year (2008) we assumed this would be fixed and there would be adequate supply for this Christmas. Obviously we were wrong. But, we have them now and would be happy to accept your orders along with our apologies for being out earlier.
2010 Rods and Accessories: Great news here! Everything is IN STOCK and ready to ship immediately. The new 2010 Fly Rods, Casting Rods, Spinning Rods, and all accessories. The new Walleye rods are spectacular and feature many models in GLX. The new ProGreen saltwater rods are just wonderful rods. I have used several models and continue to be impressed.
