25% OFF G. LOOMIS! CUMULUS Rods and CI4 Reels Arrive, Trade Ins, New Web Address, and Lots More…..
Hi Folks,
Ever sat down and started going through boxes of pictures you’ve accumulated over many years? This question is obviously addressed to those of us who actually remember when there were cameras that used film and necessitated having prints made in order to see how our pictures came out. And after that inspection were relegated to shoeboxes, unused drawers, closet shelves, etc. If you are younger and a "digital person" just think about going through all of your picture folders in your computer. Either way, it’s an interesting exercise. Happiness, pain, sorrow, amazement, and memories are all there. We only need to take the time to sit down and examine the contents.
So I did. Mounds and mounds of pictures of our kids, friends, parties, vacations, fish of various sizes and species, embarrassing moments, dogs, various homes we’ve had, you name it. They are all there. And a few surprises.
I found some old pictures I had actually copied from Green’s Camp on Lake of the Woods in Nestor Falls, Ontario, Canada. My folks were friends with one of the owners of Green’s as well as one of the lake’s early guides, Kenny McLeod, who told endless stories of his early days of guiding for Greens. These pictures were from his prime years.
Most were pictures from the 1930’s to about the 1950’s. Amazing in many ways. The most notable picture was of a guide holding what was at the time the world record musky. This marvelous fish weighed in at about 59 lbs. The guide had run a stick through its gills and was holding it with another fellow, both smiling widely for the photographer. This was from a time when the route to the camp was a dirt logging road and the trip a rugged adventure. Only avid fishermen dared to undertake such a trek. Once there you were assigned a honest to goodness real log cabin with a wash bowl and a cot. Toilets were outside and amenities were non-existent. Meals were provided in the cookhouse which was nothing more than a bigger log cabin.
Now get this. Guides rowed their parties out to the prime fishing spots on the lake. Rowed. In a heavy wooden boat with two fishermen and a guide. Rowed 5 miles or more. Each way. This was a time of long days, tough guides, and fantastic fishing.
Some of the other pictures show 25, 50, 100 or more walleye laid out with two fishermen and the guide proudly displaying their catch. Or a picture of 10 northern pike, all at least 10 lbs, hung on a board with the requisite conquerors close by.
I realized after looking at so many pictures of these "trophy" catches that most likely they never saw the dinner table. This fishing was not about sustenance, but more about macho and supremacy over nature. Fishermen back then reveled in taking as many fish as possible just for the sake of the end-of-day pictures and bragging rights. Maybe the good old days weren’t that good. Certainly not for the fish.
Then I had a thought. What if they had actually practiced catch and release back then? What sort of a fishery would there be in Lake of the Woods today? Would this lake be better or worse? Would this be the place of more world records and more stories of monster fish and expeditions? We will never know.
Today we all practice (or should) catch-and-release. Are we now making up for past indiscretions? Are we successfully undoing damage caused by over fishing both recreationally and commercially in our lakes, rivers, and oceans? My opinion, which you get since I write this tome, is "I think we are". Are we "there" yet? Nope, but we sure have made some progress. About 20 years ago Lake of the Woods was really in distress. Fish stocks were off and fish size was down. Now it’s back and better than many can remember. Only possible by limitations on commercial fishing , reduced catch limits, slot sizing, and catch-and-release practices.
Many other fisheries can boast similar success stories. All because we finally connected the dots. I think we have realized that what we have today could be better tomorrow. But we all must work together. I’m optimistic we can. After all, everyone wants their kids to enjoy experiences equal to or better than their own. With everyone on board this is definitely a promise we can keep to the next and future generations.

Lower Megabass Prices and 1,000 new Lures just received………………..
Last newsletter we let everyone know that we had reduced ALL Megabass prices. You definitely confirmed this was a good decision as Megabass lures have been selling at a pace we have never seen before. Fortunately we just received over 700 Megabass Lures as a restock and anticipate another 600 lures to be arriving any day. This will definitely cover those spring fishing needs for many of you.
Included in our new items are the Griffon 6cc, the Deep Diving Griffon 6cc, many new or favorite colored Vision 110’s, the new Z-Crank X, and many, many more of the really hot and hard to find lures.
If you are a Megabass fan (and how could you not be if you ever used a Megabass lure) then we have you covered – for now. The early bird gets the worm and the early Megabass customer gets the best selection to pick from. Fair warning……..
2010 American Legacy Fishing Ohio River Tournament………..
Yes, we sponsor a Bass Tournament. Right here in Evansville, Indiana on the beautiful Ohio River. We would just LOVE to have to join us for a very relaxed and fun day of fishing.
The second season of the American Legacy Ohio River Series is scheduled to get underway. All tournaments will go out of Angel Mounds boat ramp in Evansville, Indiana beginning on April 10th (call us for directions if you need to). All tournaments are on Saturday.
This is contingent on the river cooperating. If the Ohio River is at or above 20ft we will not fish for obvious safety reasons. We have twelve tournaments scheduled throughout the spring, summer and fall with a Classic to be fished on October 23rd. To be eligible to fish the classic you must fish at least 60% of the regularly scheduled events. Entry fee is $50 with a 100% payback. In addition to monies held back for the Classic from the entry fees American Legacy will add a $500 gift card for first place, a $250 gift card for second place and a $100 gift card for third place finish in the Classic.
This is a great opportunity for local fishermen who want to fish tournaments but don’t like to drive for hours and burn a lot of gas to get to a lake away from home. All of you bass fishermen are invited to fish with us. For further information contact Don Hardesty at [email protected] or phone 1 812 568 5442.
