First of all, we hope you had and are having a great Thanksgiving Weekend. We trust it has been fun so far and you’re about to digest all that good food from Thursday. We’re working on this ourselves!

Ever hear of Andres Segovia? For those of you who haven’t he was, in my opinion, the best classical guitarist to ever live. He was from Andalucía, Spain, born in 1893 and was almost 95 years old when he passed away in 1987. He was truly one-of-a-kind. Many of his recordings are still available today, and still the benchmark for classical guitar aficionados.

Dixie and I had the rare good fortune to see Mr. Segovia in concert in our home town of Evansville, Indiana about 25 or 26 years ago. He was quite old at that time and had a reputation for being “grumpy”. More to the point, he didn’t tolerate distracting audience noises (such as talk while he was performing) that he felt damaged his performance for the rest of the audience. He was known to stop in the middle of a piece and stare at the offender(s) until they resumed appropriate silence. Then he would resume his performance.

 I never felt such behavior was grumpiness as much as simply having the chutzpah to reinforce his rules for performing. Fortunately at the performance we attended there were no incidents and therefore no pauses in the over two hour concert.

Segovia was a not a big man and by the time we saw him quite stooped. He made no attempt to engage the audience in mindless banter, but simply took the bare stage, made himself comfortable on a stool, and began playing. Oh boy, did he ever play! I had many classic guitar recordings, but Segovia’s performance literally blew me away. The notes were electric and absolutely accurate. The selection of music demonstrated his range and talent better than any I have heard since. And his genius was so, so obvious. It was the most remarkable concert I have ever attended, even to this day.

So why am I off on telling you about a classical guitar player named Andres Segovia in a fishing newsletter? Well, it’s just that sometimes there are events in a person’s life that literally set the bar for all future events. This concert is the one by which I judge all others. And honestly, nothing else has ever measured up.

It is the same way with my fishing. About 20 years ago I caught a 17 lb northern pike that did at least three aerial out-of-the-water jumps between hook up and landing. It was spectacular. And although not a huge fish, the fight soon became my standard by which every other fish and ensuing fight is judged. As yet, nothing has equaled this long past event.

We all need a baseline by which we measure current situations or events. I suspect most of us have such benchmarks. I think that’s important as it’s the nucleus of continuing “the pursuit”, whether that pursuit be fishing or concerts. If you’re really lucky, there will be that one “oh wow” event that will set the benchmark for various activities. The more of these you have the more fortunate you are.

So here’s my point. Over this Thanksgiving weekend take just a few minutes to be thankful for events that have given you benchmarks for future pursuits. They may be a little league game, a child’s first fish, or whatever. If you have a few, you are indeed fortunate and, in my humble opinion, should be thankful.

Now let me tell you – this is the landing net to end all landing nets. Absolutely the very highest quality, darn good lookin’, and with so many features that it makes your head spin.
