Hi Folks,
This is Memorial Day weekend here in the United States. Like many of you, our dance card is pretty full this weekend with family activities and events. And, like too many other holidays, I think we tend to forget just what Memorial Day is really all about because of the many activities that keep us so engaged over these three days.
Originally Memorial Day was called Decoration Day. It was a day to solemnly remember those who had died in service to our nation in the Civil War. Since that time we have unofficially, then officially as of 1868, had a day to honor those who fought and died protecting our way of life. By the end of the first world war Memorial Day was established as a nationwide day of remembrance for ALL who served and died, not just those from the Civil War. In 1971 Congress declared that the last Monday in May would always be the official Memorial Day thereby allowing all of us a 3 day weekend around the end of May.
I like 3 day weekends, but I can’t help but think that the generation of my children and grandchildren see Memorial Day more as a holiday and time off rather than a time to offer humble thanks for all of those who have defended our freedom since this nation was founded. Maybe that’s OK since it’s really one Memorial Day and two weekend days. But we should all take some time this weekend to say “thanks” to those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. They did so we can all enjoy not only this 3 day weekend, but the other 362 days of freedom and liberties we cherish, and perhaps occasionally take for granted.
Now when I think about sacrifices, especially in these current times, I include all of those who protect us. Our soldiers and sailors to those who stand vigilant on our borders, in our airports, our cities, at our lakes and forests, and others who have chosen to dedicate themselves to our well being. Policemen, firemen, border guards, conservation officers, TSA, and many others spend their work lives protecting us. Some of them will be called upon to give their lives in doing so.
I’m from a generation whose parents lived through the first world war, the depression, and later the second world war and Korean conflict. We saw a cold war, a nuclear arms race, Vietnam, and continuing regional conflicts throughout the world. We have seen many give their lives in these conflicts, sometimes for what later would prove to be questionable gain. But those who sacrificed never wavered, never questioned the cause.
I don’t like war. I wish conflicts could be settled by peaceful negation, tolerance, and common sense. But I don’t think that our race has progressed to that point as yet. We’re making progress, but it is painfully slow and oftentimes two steps forward and one step back. It shouldn’t be this way. Perhaps our grandchildren will eventually live in a world where sacrifices that Memorial Day recognizes are no longer necessary. Imagine that.
Like all of you I love this country and the freedoms we enjoy. So on this day, this Memorial Day, take a few minutes to give thanks for what we have and to those who have given their lives so this great country can continue to be the land of opportunity, the land of the free, and the home of the brave. You’ll feel good when you do.
I know every store you pass by this weekend is likely having a Memorial Day Sale. The newspaper is loaded with ads, all extolling the virtues of product and price and perhaps, but just perhaps, service. So what are we offering? How about an Abu Garcia Revo SX High Speed (7.1:1) Right Hand retrieve for $119.95 (normally $179.95)? Or a Left Hand Daiwa Procaster Rojo for 50% off. Or some “inside stuff” on the new Loomis surf fishing rods? Or….well, just read the newsletter. And have a great Memorial Day weekend!

New G. Loomis Surf Rods Announced ~ American Legacy Fishing EXCLUSIVE………………….
We were very upset when G. Loomis discontinued ALL of their very popular surf fishing rods last Fall. We bought up what we could, but those supplies vaporized in no time and since then we have been left with no G. Loomis surf rods to offer all of you surf fishermen. That is, up until now!
G. Loomis has just confirmed that they will be introducing 13 new Surf Fishing Rods. Lengths will be 8′, 1 pc 5 and 6 power; 8’6″ ft, 2 pc, 4 and 5 power; 8’10”, 1 pc 4 and 5 power; 9′, 2 pc, 4 and 5 power; 10′, 2 pc, 4 and 5 power, 10’6″, 2 pc, 4 power; 13′, 2 pc, 4 and 5 power. All rods will accommodate spinning reels. There are no rods that accommodate casting reels being introduced at this time. Unlike the older G. Loomis surf rods all of these new 2 piece rods will have both pieces equal length. This was always a problem with the earlier Loomis surf rods making them more difficult to transport.
And it gets better. All of the NEW G. Loomis surf fishing rods will be the remarkable IMX blank material which most of you know is extremely light, so very sensitive, and at the same time so very, very powerful.
And it keeps getting MUCH BETTER. These 13 new rods will have an innovative tangle-free guide system never before used for surf fishing rods. It is brand new and as far as we know G. Loomis is the first major manufacturer to ever us these unique guides on production rods. The benefits will be obvious as soon as you start using these remarkable rods. Much greater ease-of-use, longer casts, and better control from the “get go”.
Prices will be in the $400.00 to $500.00 range. This may seem fairly expensive, but remember this is an all IMX blank, premium reel seat, and the world’s most innovative guide system ever to be used on a surf fishing rod. And, like all G. Loomis rods includes a limited lifetime warranty.
All rods are due to start shipping the middle of June, so by our next newsletter we hope to be able to give you specific model numbers and all specifications including prices for each model.
New Daiwa Rods and Reels….A Sneak Peek…….
Saltwater. If I had to sum up the new 2010-2011 Daiwa rods and reels this would be this one word. A bit disappointing for the freshwater fishermen, but surly very exciting for you saltwater folks.
Starting with a brand new logo (I will never understand why companies think they need a new logo, especially one you can’t read(!), Daiwa has expanded their saltwater single and two speed reels to include a “35” sized reel which, no surprise, fits in between the 40 size and 50 size Saltiga and Saltist conventional reels. Our take is the Saltiga reel lines have been completely redesigned for 2010-2011 and include reel sizes 20, 30, 35, 40 and 50. The Saltist reels now include the new 35 size.
There is a new Emblem-A saltwater spinning reel that has the unique feature of having two different spools included. The 5000 size reel has a 4500 size spare spool; the 6000 size has a 5500 size spare spool. Frankly, this is one of those ideas that you have to ask yourself, “why didn’t they do this a long time ago?” The Emblem is your basic Daiwa gearbox (we call it the “maytag” gear box) and surely will be very durable. A nice reel for saltwater.
There are also many new Saltiga Boat rods, Jigging rods, etc. Also some Saltist Jigging rods. Overall it looks like there will be about 31 new models for 2010-2011.
Freshwater. The “hottest” item is the super-sexy Team Daiwa Zillion-R which has a carbon fiber “swept” handle, a new 7 disc drag system, 12 bearings, 7.3:1 retrieve, 8.5 oz., and lots more. There’s also two new STEEZ drop shot rods, one spinning and one casting and a new Team Daiwa Zillion swimbait rod.
Finally, there are some new line counter reels and other items, but details for now are sketchy. We hope to have a full report after ICAST which is in the middle of July.
Do you Twitter, Toot, Tweet, Twiddle, or otherwise….
