We continue to be amazed by Gunther Van Ginneken’s really nice zander (walleye) he catches in his local reservoir in Belgium. Believe it or not, this is one of his smaller fish. Well done, Gunther!
Hi Folks,
You know, no matter how careful you are, there are times things just don’t work out the way you planned.
Every year about this time some of my buddies and me head to Lake Fork in northeast Texas for some trophy bass fishing. That and evening beer drinking, card playing, storytelling, and fried food “noshing”. No criticism or eye rolling from wives, girlfriends, or others of the opposite sex. As you might imagine, we all look forward to this trip.
A few years ago when we were planning one of these trips my buddy Steve invited me to fish out of his friend Larry’s new Champion bass boat along him and Larry. I knew Steve and Larry had been fishing buddies for many years and just loved largemouth fishing, often competing in regional tournaments. And although both Larry and I kidded Steve about his “lack of fishing skills (or success)” he was actually a very good fisherman. Someone I could certainly learn some new tricks from as far as bass fishing was concerned. I said “yes”.
Larry’s Champion boat was a beautiful rig with all the goodies such as dual fish finders, trolling motor, electric anchor, hydraulic jack plate, etc. all driven by a monster 225 horsepower motor. Man, this boat was plush as well as functional, and at almost 22 ft long would easily accommodate three fishermen. Best of all, this arrangement meant I wouldn’t have to pull my somewhat dated and far less well equipped Lund boat down to Texas. To me, a perfect arrangement!
Since everyone in our group worked we all agreed to leave Thursday evening after work and drive straight through so we could be on the water Friday morning bright and early. Each tow vehicle had at least 2 drivers, so no one would have to drive the entire 800+ miles by themselves. Best of all, this way we could have 3 full days of fishing and then drive straight through back to Indiana Sunday evening so we could all be at work Monday morning, only missing one day (Friday) of work. Slightly extreme? Yea, probably so, but you do what you have to do when fishing is concerned.
Like all of our previous trips we stopped in Tennessee at a roadside café and had a catfish dinner. Then it was on to Memphis, Little Rock, Texarkana, Sulphur Springs, and soon enough we would arrive in Quitman, Texas which for us was the “gateway” to Lake Fork and a place where we gathered some necessary supplies such a beer, snacks, licenses, local “hot” baits, etc. After this stop we were prepared for 3 days of fishing.
Once we left Quitman it was on to Lake Fork and the marina and motel that we would stay at. We checked in, said some “howdy doodys” to some of the staff we had come to know, and paid a launch ramp fee so we could get on the water.
Larry and Steve were a real team on the boat ramp, so I just sort of sat back and let them do their thing, which they did as if choreographed. Steve checked the boat out and undid the tie downs, unhooked the winch hook and backed the trailer into the lake so Larry could start the engine and back the boat into the lake. Then Steve pulled the truck and trailer off the ramp and parked and then he and I boarded Larry’s waiting boat. Like I said, as if choreographed.
We idled for a few minutes as Larry and Steve decided where to fish first. A shore line with heavy brush was decided upon and soon we were under way headed up lake to the agreed spot. As we pulled up I grabbed a crankbait. Larry and Steve did the same. We agreed that we would rotate fishing positions so no one would always be stuck in the middle nor would one person always have one end or the other. Very democratic, I thought to myself since this was Larry’s boat and Steve was his usual fishing partner.
A few minutes after we started fishing I heard Larry mumble, “Well that’s weird.”
He was looking back around the driver’s seat base. Seems it was wet and there was what appeared to be standing water. Our tow down to Lake Fork had been dry with no rain. Plus Larry’s boat was towed with a full cover on it. So this water was indeed a strange phenomenon. Larry looked at Steve and said, “Steve, you did put the plug in the boat, didn’t you?”
Steve looked up from his rod with a quizzical, startled, and surprised look. “What plug?”, he asked Larry.
“The drain plug. You know, the plug you must have in the drain plug hole so the boat won’t S-I-N-K,” Larry said in a terse, nervous voice.
“I didn’t know you took it out”, Steve quickly said.
“Yes, I ALWAYS take it out”, said Larry as he began to flip switches for the dual bilge pumps.
“Uh sorry, but I didn’t put it back in when we launched”, said Steve obviously embarrassed with little or no defense for his oversight.
By now the boat was definitely filling with water and any thoughts that the twin bilge pumps would solve this problem dissipated as the water continued to rise with the bilge pumps pumping away. Faced with possible sinking we decided that our best option would be to fire up the motor and try to get the boat up on plane. Then we could use the natural suction out the drain hole to drain some of the water out of the boat. At least enough where we could get back to the ramp and try and get the boat out of the lake. After all, the drain plug was out! But this carried some risks. If we couldn’t get up on plane then it was possible when we shut down the boat would swamp, water coming in over the transom.
Larry fired up the 225 engine and gave it full throttle. The engine struggled. The bow raised up. Way up. Sorta like a boat that doesn’t have the right prop trying to get on plane. “You and Steve get as far up on the bow as you can,” Larry directed.
We both immediately did as Larry directed. It was almost as if we were trying to climb up a wall. Still the boat wouldn’t plane. We continued plowing ahead, making waves that would rival any river towboat. Other fishermen were staring. Was it our huge wake or…..did…they….know? We plowed on and the engine seemed to be “freeing up” and turning some more RPM’s. Larry was gradually turning the boat back toward the direction of the marina and ramp when it finally came over on plane. We all smiled. Steve took the wheel as Larry checked to see how much water we had taken on. It was a bunch.
As we cruised up and down the lake we decided that we would ease the nose of the boat up to the marina dock and I would jump out, get the truck and trailer and back it down the ramp. Larry would then put the boat on the trailer as best he could at which time I would hook the winch hook on the boat and try and pull the boat out of the lake. Hopefully we had drained enough water out of the boat that Larry’s truck could pull it and the trailer out of the lake and onto dry land.
Well, the plan worked and soon Larry’s new Champion boat and motor and trailer were out of the lake and sitting beside our motel room. Safe to say all three of us were relieved. Smiles broke out all around, even from Steve.
Now I’m not sure just what we did the rest of that Friday, but I think I remember it took the boat forever to drain. But it only took a microsecond for both Larry and I to make Steve the butt of many, many jokes and lots of teasing. Once the boat was safe on dry land let the joking and ribbing begin. Which I can assure you it did.
Now image what happened that evening when the rest of our gang returned from the lake. Poor Steve. Talk about a target. Everyone had a shot a Steve and like the man he is, he took it all well. The next morning several of the guys joked about how soothing it was being able to sleep next to flowing water, a not-so-subtle reference to the water still draining out of Larry’s boat well into the night.
So we had a fun trip and to be honest, a heck of a lot of laughs over the “Drain Plug Incident.” Even several years later, that kidding of Steve continues to this day. I mean, why wouldn’t we? Trip to Lake Fork: $850, New Fishing Rods and Reels: $600, Launch Fee at Marina: $15, Having unlimited jokes about a guy leaving the drain plug out of his buddies boat: Priceless

We expect the condition of all rods and reels to be honestly and accurately described. If we receive the trades in lesser condition than described, we will re-evaluate the values and call you back to discuss possible options. This very rarely happens, but we do greatly appreciate accurate descriptions of your trade-ins. We cannot accept any rods or reels that are house brands. That includes reels or rods that are a Bass Pro Shops, Cabela’s, Gander Mountain, or Dick’s Sporting Goods name brand. Also, we cannot accept rods that have been modified from the factory condition. This includes tip top replacement, guide replacement, handle modification, and any other modification that would diminish the resale value. We cannot accept any rods or reels that are damaged in any way that would affect their performance or functionality. And we cannot accept rods or reels deemed “vintage” where collector value is greater than functional value. Finally, we reserve the right to confirm ownership and to refuse any rod or reel.

OK, we gotta brag! Here’s customer Lance Ricketts holding a 9 lb, 7 oz largemouth caught in Table Rock Lake using (ta da!) our Stealth Bomb Umbrella Rigs. This same afternoon Lance also landed a 8 lb, 4 oz largemouth on the same rig. Need we say more?
Finally, World’s Best Umbrella (“Alabama”) Rig Is Here……….
Think these rigs don’t catch fis? See Above!
We’re going to level with you here. We were not real thrilled when everyone started using these so called “Alabama” rigs. Some of you call them Umbrella Rigs. We just saw this as perhaps a bit unfair to the fish. That is until we actually tried a few. Simply put, we are now eating crow. These rigs Catch Fish! My oh my do they catch fish!
That said, there are some problems. First, many that we were able to get our hands on were crude and not very well made. Second, the swivels that came with these were cheap and frankly not very good quality. Especially when you consider that these rigs sell for as much as $40 a pop(!). So, we decided to have one of our custom lure makers take a long hard look at this design to see if it was possible to make an Umbrella Rig that was high quality but priced fairly given the components that were used. Folks, I think we hit a home run!
American Legacy Fishing’s Stealth Bomb Umbrella Rigs are truly different. First, we have a custom painted lead head with custom eyes. No one else does. Second, our wire extensions are high grade .041 Stainless Steel. Third, our wire ends are made so when you lose an end swivel you can actually replace it, so no more throwing away your rigs due to missing a couple of end swivels. Forth, Our swivels are all ball bearing Sampo’s – no cheap swivels here. Fifth, or Stealth Bomb Umbrella Rigs come with a retainer next to the jig head that allows you to compress the rig for easy (and compact) storage. Finally, our wires in the jig head are twisted so there is never a chance that they will pull loose or pull out. The price of all this quality? $24.99 Not cheap, but when you consider the quality, workmanship, and the fact these are custom rigs that address most other rigs short comings they are a heck of a deal.
Right now we have a very good stock of Stealth Bombs on hand. We have 4 different colors, all 1/2 oz. total rig weight.
Now you know, you can’t catch anything using our Stealth Bomb rigs and just the swivels. You gotta’ have some nice size plastic swimbaits and, as you would expect, we have a suggestion: We like the Reaction Innovations Swimbaits. There are three sizes: The Little Dipper (9 per package – 5 colors, Skinny Dipper (7 per package – 10 colors), and the Big Dipper (4 per package – 4 colors). These babies Catch Fish. If you have any doubts, see the picture above!
Need the Right Rod and Reel (and line) for those Alabama Rigs? We have Just The Ticket – In Stock……
If there has ever been a fishing phenomenon that has taken the fishing world by storm it has to be the invention and use of the Alabama rigs. One day no one has heard of it, the next everyone, and we mean E-V-E-R-Y-O-N-E is using them. Call them Alabama Rigs, Umbrella Rigs, or Stealth Bombs, everyone is throwing these rigs.
And that’s great, but from what we’ve seen many of you are not up to speed as far as the best rod, reel , and line that allows these marvelous rigs to perform at their best. When you use these Alabama/Umbrella/ Stealth Bombs you really need a swimbait rod coupled to a larger reel. Now we wouldn’t be telling you this unless we thought we had the perfect combo for you. And we do.
We recommend using a swimbait rod such as the G. Loomis Swimbait rod SWBR904 ($265) orSWBR955 ($270). If you’re throwing bigger jigs (3/8 oz or more) with bigger swimbait plastics you may even want to consider the SWBR956 ($270) or even the SWBR957 ($295). If you like split grip rods we also have some awesome new 2012 G. Loomis GL2 Swimbait rods such as the GL2 956C SWB ($245) or the GL2 957C SWB ($245).
Now that you have the right rod then you’ll need a reel than can stand up to the heavier lure weights both when you cast out as well as retrieve since you have a lot more weight than you normally would if you were fishing just one jig, crankbait, or spinner. You need big gears and guts. What to use? The Curado 300 series reels are just the ticket! Right hand we recommend the Curado CU300E, left hand the Curado CU301E. Price is $249.99. Not bad for a bullet-proof low profile casting reel with extra line capacity that’s Made in Japan and practically indestructible. No more side plate bearing failures for you!
Once you have the right rod and reel then all that left is line, and of course we have a recommendation for this as well. All of us here at American Legacy Fishing like using either 65 lb test $21.49 (16 lb mono equivalent) or 80 lb. test $24.99 (18 lb mono equivalent) Power Pro braided line or, better yet, New Power Pro Super Slick – 65 lb $24.99 or 80 lb $27.99. A 150 yard spool of either will fill that Curado 300 series reel perfectly and now you will be all set to really get the most bang-for-the-buck out of your Alabama/Umbrella/Stealth Bomb rig.
Right now we have everything in stock, so consider our recommendations if you will be fishing these “hot” rigs.

Use Daiichi Hooks and (Possibly) Win $500,000……………
Play the lottery? Like to fish? WANT SOME “EXTRA” CASH? If you do maybe this deal is for you. So just what is “the deal” you ask? Well, the folks at Daiichi Hooks just announced they will pay any fisherman $500,000 who lands the all-tackle world record walleye, largemouth bass, spotted sea trout, and saltwater striper using a Daiichi hook. That’s $500,000 for each species!
Fish must be legally caught on Daiichi hooks and in accordance with IGFA rules. Anglers must pre-register at www.worldrecordhooks.com web site in order to eligible. This contest closes November 15, 2012.
So why are we announcing then when we don’t sell Daiichi hooks you ask? Well, we actually DO sell Daiichi hooks. They’re attached to ALL Kopper’s Live Target Lures and right now we just happen to have a boatload of these fantastic lures. We won’t bore you with the lure details, as we’re already doing that below. But we figured this was information you needed to know. Who knows, it could be Y-O-U!

Engel DEEP BLUE Coolers are IN STOCK with FREE SHIPPING to any USA Address……..
These super coolers and will hold ice (or heat) for as long as 10 days. We actually tested these in Florida last year, leaving an 80 quart cooler filled with ice, beer, bait, etc. out at the end of a dock in the sun on 90 degree days for 8 days. At the end of the 8th day everything was ice cold and we still had lots of ice in the cooler!
We told you in the last newsletter that simply by having these amazing coolers we would probably sell them down quickly. Well it’s happening! Fair warning here that these coolers are going F-A-S-T, so if having one of these babies is even close to being on your radar screen you need to order now. It has taken about 6 months to get what we now have, so that sort of gives you an idea why everyone wants an Engel.
We know these coolers aren’t cheap – the 65 quart, for example, is $339.99, but just ask yourself how many coolers you’ve thrown away over the years. If you’re like us it’s a bunch. All at about $50 – $70 a pop. Add in the expense of all the extra ice you had to buy after a day or so to keep your stuff cold or had food and drinks spoil because your cooler just didn’t hold the cold and these Engel’s are a bargain. Best of all, this will be the LAST Cooler you’ll ever buy!
Like we said, we have them in stock and can ship now. No shipping fees (to ANY USA Address), no packaging fees, just the price of the cooler. What a deal!
Shimano CORE 100Mg7’s are HERE!…………………….
Many of you have asked for a 7.0:1 retrieve ratio in this “oh so light” premium low profile made-in-Japan reel. Well, Shimano listened and actually made some improvements in this model over the “standard” CORE 50’s and 100’s to accommodate the toughest fishing techniques and baits.
First improvement is a larger HEG forged brass drive gear. This is more durable gearing and necessary when moving from a 6.3:1 to the 7.0:1 retrieve using the above techniques. More “guts” for those tough applications. Add to this the new, lighter Magnumlite (who thinks up these names?) spool, superfree bearings, and longer handle/power grip and you have a reel that will handle even the heaviest, toughest applications.
Specs are: 30 in. line retrieve per revolution, 10/110, 12/90 line capacity, 11 lb drag (max), 5 bearings, 6.7 oz weight. Only 100 of these New CORE100Mg7 reels were available from Shimano and we took a bunch of those, so for now supplies are limited. Price is $399.99 and the reel is only available in right hand retrieve. Like we said, if you fish flipping, ripping, swimbait, Alabama (umbrella) rigs, or Frogs this reel is for you. It doesn’t get any better than this!

Sunline Reaction FC – Fluorocarbon Line that STRETCHES!……………
The big problem with fluoro lines, in our mind, has always been that you trade of line durability for no stretch. And stretch is actually GOOD. Especially when fishing reaction baits such as cranks, spinners, buzzers, etc. Without stretch you have a much greater risk of the fish coming off either at hook-set or when fighting. With some stretch the line actually compensates for some of these risks. Why do you think mono is still so popular?
This new Sunline Reaction FC line has the same softness, durability, and abrasion resistance as regular FC Sniper fluorocarbon line, but with 10% more stretch. Invisibility is increased with Sunline Reaction FC’s grey/blue tint and it’s high specific gravity (1.78 vs. water’s 1.00) allows your bait to reach maximum depth sooner and deeper. Overall this is a product we have all been waiting for.
Sunline Reaction FC Fluorocarbon line is available in 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, and 20 lb test in spools of 200 years each. Price is $22.99 We have every size IN STOCK and suggest you consider this remarkable line now while preparing your tackle for the spring fishing season. We can assure you this line will rock. Just be sure to troll it out (nothing on the end) after you put it on your reel for maximum performance! (Do this with ALL lines)
Custom STEALTH Made-In-The-USA Baits are Now In Stock and W-A-Y Underpriced…………………..
Let me make this perfectly clear from the get-go. These baits are priced Way Too Low. The Crankbaits are only $15.99 each and the Spinnerbaits are $8.99 each. Hey, these are handmade here in the USA custom baits. Hand assembled with premium TroKar and Mustad hooks, hand painted, and assembled. Like we said, Way to Cheap for the quality and performance!
Everyone is looking for an extra edge out on the water. The fact is fish have seen the same factory baits over and over. It is time to show them something a little different…..something custom. The new Stealth Custom Spinnerbaits and Crankbaits are some of the finest lures on the market. The custom hand-tied spinnerbait skirts and ultra-realistic custom painted crankbaits give you the edge you’ve been looking for.
The Stealth Custom Shop spinnerbaits are currently available in 3/8 oz. and 1/2 oz. Double Willow Leaf models. There are seven proven and tested fish catching colors that are sure to make even the pickiest bass commit. The spinnerbaits utilize an ultra-thin wire that throws off a ton of underwater vibration. Stealth’s hand-tied skirts pulse and undulate in the water like nothing the fish have ever seen.
If the spinnerbait bite isn’t happening, tie on one of the SCS1.5 or SCS1.5 DD crankbaits. These baits were designed to be some of the best shallow cranking baits in your tackle box. Currently available in six handpicked custom colors, there is an option for every water color you encounter. These baits run true out of the package, no tuning needed. The SCS1.5 square bill will run 2 – 5 ft. and the SCS1.5 DD will run 6 – 9 ft. These are high performance crankbaits that will deflect through wood and rock without getting hung up.
Say again: these baits should probably sell for between $25 – $30 at the least. And we’re pretty sure that sooner or later the manufacturer (one guy) will up and realize what he’s created and the price will zoom. Until then we’re pricing them at his suggested retail and no more at his request. Get them while you can at this incredible price. They won’t last long. We just hope the manufacturer will!
