Catching vs Fishing

Catching vs Fishing

Hi Folks,

There’s fishing and then there’s catching. You’re probably doing a lot more of one than the other.

Like most of you I started out fishing with my Dad’s hand-me-downs. These were very used, very old fishing rods and reels. But to a kid barely able to hold a rod they were magic. My own rod and reel!

As I grew older I eventually bought myself a brand new rod and reel. Not sure what the rod brand was, but I remember the reel as a Mitchell 300 spinning reel. To me this was nirvana.

About 20 years ago I realized I was doing more fishing than I had ever imagined possible, but my “catching” wasn’t so good. Sure, I got lots of strikes and hooked up with plenty of fish, but couldn’t seem to land near as many as I thought I should. I knew a lot about fishing. I knew how to select baits and lures and match them to conditions. I knew how to pick spots where fish were. Frankly, I was a damn good fisherman save the catching part.

This was about the time that I began to reevaluate my equipment. I started looking at my rods and reels and line. I explored my options and investigated all the new rods and reels I could. Then I had my epiphany. There really was a BIG difference!

Many of you may not give this much thought, but oftentimes the difference in just fishing and actually catching is the equipment you’re using. And what seems odd to me is I know fishermen who spend thousands of dollars on lures, baits, boats, electronics, you name it – but, they fish with rods and reels that are, simply put, not the best. Yea, you may have some sentimental attachment to a particular rod and reel, but I can assure you if it’s very old at all there’s something better out there.

At this point you’re probably thinking, “Here it comes. The inevitable sales pitch”.

Well, maybe so. But the real point I’m trying to make is that given how valuable your time is and how much you love fishing and how few hours in the week, month, year you have to do it. Given how much you have invested in boat, motor, trailer, baits, tackle bags, etc. Why oh why would you not have the best rods and reels that turn fishing into catching?

I came to this realization myself back then. I systematically upgraded my rods and reels so they were as up to date as my boat and electronics, my baits and lures, and everything else I had been investing in. And you know what? I started doing a hell of a lot more catching when I was fishing!

My wife Dixie says, “You may not always be right, but you’re never in doubt.” Yea, that’s me. But in this case I truly believe I am right and I do need to share this with all of you. Today’s best rods and reels are nothing short of amazing. Just in the last 2 or 3 years there have been some crazy good improvements that we never would have dreamed of before. And I truly believe that American Legacy Fishing & Outdoors carries the best of the best. And, we have the staff that can guide you and make sure you get the best bang-for-the-buck possible.

Most of you know we have the world’s best rod and reel trade in program where you get credit for your old gear when you place an order for new. This is a great way to get the best gear without breaking the budget in the process. We also have the only “Zero Cost” G. Loomis Warranty on the planet, and absolutely the best selection of what we consider “the best” fishing products available, whether that be rods, reels, line, lures, nets, you name it. If we don’t think it’s the best value for the money we simply don’t carry it.

So maybe this sounds like a sales pitch, but in my mind it’s just a heads up to all of our great friends and customers who love fishing, but would love to do more catching. Think about this and give us a call. We promise to help you get the best fishing gear so you can begin doing more catching from this point forward.

Thanks for your time reading my ramblings. I really am all about catching these days!

This week we have a great opportunity for all you G. Loomis rod fans out there.  We have some leftover iCast rods on Sale at a hefty 25% OFF Discount.

Thanks to all of our great friends and customers who have supported us and passed our name on to their friends. We know we are only here by making sure your needs are our first and only priority. Please let me know if we ever fail to meet and exceed your expectations.

Tight lines,

Tom Ashby

A good article. I think you spend less overall if you stick with the quality products.
    G. Loomis, St. Croix, Shimano,…they have a proven record for very good fishing equipment in price ranges for everyone. Spend a bit more for quality and catch more fish.
