Dobyns Champion 706 CB Review

April 9, 2014 By Brian Dolne 1 Comment

Dobyns has recently introduced some new and exciting rods to their already Dobyns Champion 706 CBimpressive lineup.  One of their newest additions is the Dobyns Champion 706 CB.  I have given this rod a pretty good testing and figured I would pass along our findings.

I throw the Strike King 5XD a lot down around the Kentucky Lake area and am always searching for a rod that has the perfect action to throw this bait.  It seems like every rod has its drawbacks: deep cranking rods are too stiff, shallow cranking rods are too soft, you get the point.  Well, when we got the new Dobyns Champion 706 CB in stock earlier this year, I had to check it out.  The action seemed spot on, and I am a HUGE fan of Dobyns Crankbait rods.

So, I decideDobyns Champion 706 CBd to give the Champion 706 CB a try.  I was hoping to find  the perfect 5XD rod, and I was fortunate enough to find that and so much more….

This is a unique rod with a very unique action.  It has a nice, soft tip like you would expect from a typical crankbait rod but I was also pleasantly surprised to find this rod has some backbone to it.  It isn’t by any means your ideal jig rod but it has just the right tip to sling a crankbait a country mile but also the power to throw some of the lighter swimbaits and rip a lipless crankbait.  This is a pretty awesome combination.

Typically, I find crankbait rods to be extremely limited in their applications but this rod is different.  It even does a great job throwing some of the bigger jerkbaits and topwater lures.  Heck, I even threw a 3/4 oz. spinnerbait on it and never felt like I photo 5was lacking power on the hookset.

I really feel like this is the ideal moving bait “power fishing” rod.  It’s not designed for the finesse stuff but bigger jerkbaits, topwaters, lipless crankbaits, swimbaits, and spinnerbaits all can be fished like a champ with this rod.

Priced at $249.99, this is not a cheap rod but it is reasonably priced for the performance and quality of the components.  If you are looking for a premium quality crankbait rod that has some other applications, give the Dobyns Champion 706CB a look.  You will be glad you did!
