Question: My Son has a G. Loomis 2 piece fly rod that he is unable to get apart at the ferrule. This makes it unusable except those times when he can strap it into a long boat so that it don’t get broken. Do you have any solutions?
Answer: First thing we recommend you try is to use surgical rubber gloves or one of those jar lid openers. Try to twist the rod at ferrule to get the 2 sections apart. If this doesn’t work then try using ice packs at the ferrule area for 20 minutes then try to twist apart again. Stuck sections like this on any rod is usually caused by a vapor lock. Sometimes the little rubber plug in the male end of the rod section slips out and can cause this to happen. Once you have this apart we recommend that (now this may sound weird) that before you reassemble the two section rub the outside corner of your nose (where it joins your face) with a finger and then apply what is in fact some lubricant from your body to the section male end. This will actually make taking the rod apart quite easy after use.
