My beautiful wife of 43 years and myself drove to Orlando, Florida for ICAST after spending the weekend of July 11-12 with our grandkids in Cincinnati. I had no idea that trip was over 900 miles – each way! We have a report on the show and what impressed us below.

This is the World’s Lightest Metal Body Casting Reel at 6.35 oz. The minimal weight is almost as impressive as the overall quality of this reel. 2009 ICAST Show and what impressed us………..
Every year in mid-July the fishing tackle industry holds it annual convention and trade show called ICAST (International Convention of Allied Sportfishing Trades – that’s a mouthful) where manufactures have the opportunity to introduce new products and “do some deals”. This year the show was held in Orlando, Florida July 15-17
Because we are so different from most tackle dealers (World’s Best Fishing Gear – World’s Best Service) and by design only carry what we think is “world’s best” we usually have fewer suppliers to visit than most. So, we try to spend more time with those who offer the BEST products.
Shimano has a new Stradic spinning reel that is pretty awesome. Called the CI4 it’s a departure from the somewhat boring gold and chrome bodies that are typical of Shimano spinning reels. How about black and red? Our take is it is an Americanized version (which means better) of the Fireblood reel offered in Asia. Our opinion: Very, very impressive at a wonderful price of $199.99 Stock is due in by September.
The new Shimano Core 50mg7 and 51mg7 (LH) were introduced at the show. Smaller than the graphite composite bodied Core 100, these reels are just spectacular. Talk about a lightweight reel. How about 5.5 oz.!! At $369.99 it’s obvious getting trim comes at a price, but when you couple this up to a Loomis GLX rod you’ll understand what nirvana is all about. We have just received these reels! And yes, I have one set aside for my grandson and me and my bride and my brother and……….
The Cumara rod line has practically doubled in models with the addition of the Reaction rods. 12 new models with slightly larger grips and lengths from 6’3″ to 7’11” cover a wide range of techniques and situations with IM10 blanks and Fuji SiC guides. At prices from $199.99 to $239.99 this has got to be one of the better rod buys out there. We should have these in stock within 60 days.
Daiwa has introduced 2 new Steez rods designed for braided line. We expect to have these in stock within 30 days. They also have a new Zillion Coastal “Hyper Speed” casting reel (7.3:1) and the new Aggrest 7.3:1 casting reels. One of our favorite reels, the round Pluton, now is available in left hand retrieve. Who says round reels can’t be sexy?
Most of Daiwa’s attention for 2009 seems to have been on saltwater reels, and there were many new spinning as well as conventional reels introduced at ICAST. The Saltiga line now has a super-duty SA-Z6500HDF spinning reel. The new Saltist and Exceler saltwater spinning reels are impressive as well. We plan to have these in stock soon.
No doubt the biggest surprise for us was 45 new G. Loomis casting and spinning rods. All we can say is a big “WOW”! Every rod was impressive with wonderful sensitivity, great lightness, and power that seemed almost mystical given the size of the blanks. I can’t go into a lot of detail here, but can tell you most of these rods are additions to the Loomis line. We expect them to start shipping by October 1, 2009. Live Target will be introducing 60 new lures by November. These are just as impressive as the 70 already available. New patterns such as blueback herring (a 3 pc killer), pumpkinseed, and bluegill are so life-like they look like they need to be in an aquarium. We’ll be stocking all of these as soon as they are available.
We found 2 products that were so impressive we just had to have them. The CSE Fishhook Removal Kit at $10 is an absolute MUST HAVE for every fisherman’s tackle bag, boat, and camp. This little kit was invented by a Minnesota emergency room physician (where else would you see fishhook injuries every day?). It includes an instructive brochure along will all you need to salvage your fishing trip or vacation and avoid a run to the emergency room. We have the fishhook removal kits as well as an instructional DVD, “A Guide to Human Fishhook Removal”($15.99), in stock and really encourage everyone to get one or two of these kits for your tackle box and boat an buy the DVD so you can claim to be an expert.
Our other “MUST HAVE” is the Cablz Sunglasses retainer/lanyard. This is an item I got personally excited about since I just can’t stand to have something lying on my neck and chaffing and smelling (from sweat) just so I can keep my sunglasses from falling in the water. My wife thinks this is some sort of personality flaw as it doesn’t bother her at all. Well, she has long, blond (not really) hair! OK, I think I’m normal and most of you would die for a retainer that stayed off your neck, not susceptible to sweat (and smelling), and never frayed, got heavy and irritated your neck. Ala CABLZ sunglasses retainers. Invented by a surgical implant guy for physicians in an operating room environment, these little babies are “IT”. They stay out from the back of your head, not on your neck. Made of surgical grade cable coated with a flexible plastic they’re sanitary, weightless, and perfect for me. So I figured you’d want some to. From $11.99 to $14.99 you just gotta have a pair. And you can help me prove to my wife I AM normal!
Overall, ICAST was impressive for it’s size and attendance this year. We saw a lot of the same faces and products, but were very pleased about our “finds” and some of the new products our suppliers will be introducing. We’ll keep you informed in future newsletters about all of this.
Loomis & Franklin and the Misled and Misinformed Angler…..the rest of the story.
As promised, we offer the rest of the Loomis & Franklin story as we understand it from several sources.
Before Gary Loomis started G. Loomis he worked for Loomis Composites. Between his leaving there and joining Lamiglas (and LONG before starting today’s G. Loomis Inc.) he struck a deal with a firm in Taiwan to produce rods. As “partners” the trademark Loomis & Franklin was recorded and registered in the USA. Soon after this we understand that Gary Loomis and the principles of the Taiwanese rod maker had a disagreement over poor deliveries from the Taiwan factory and Gary severed all ties with that company. No rods were ever delivered to Gary Loomis. Later in his career Gary Loomis would found the G. Loomis rod company which still produces the world’s best fishing rods today and bears Gary’s name.
It appears that very few if any Loomis & Franklin rods ever came into the USA. If they did, it was not as a product supported by or participated in by Gary Loomis. These rods were and are made primarily in Taiwan (and now perhaps China) and are not designed by Gary Loomis. Nor does the G. Loomis company have any relation whatsoever now or in the past with Loomis & Franklin or any products they may offer.
From what we have been able to find Loomis & Franklin rods are marketed in Australia
, Asia, and to a small degree into Europe. They have sold into Russia, but on at least one occasion infringed on G. Loomis trademarks (material designations such as GL2, GL3, etc.). That shipment of rods was ordered destroyed. The Loomis & Franklin name has also been used on reels and perhaps other fishing equipment. The spinning reels bearing the Loomis & Franklin or just Loomis name we have seen are fairly crude and certainly uninspired. Keep in mind G. Loomis has NEVER made or offered a spinning or casting reel.
We can’t comment on the quality of the rods that are currently sold under the Loomis & Franklin brand name, but we can assure everyone that they definitely ARE NOT G. Loomis, have NO relationship to G. Loomis, and are not warranted by G. Loomis. If you are told or led to believe otherwise you are not being told the truth. Only G. Loomis Inc. in Woodland, Washington, USA makes G. Loomis rods.
