NEWS FLASH – January 18, 2009

Markus Schader is barley able to hold this HUGE 42 lb Grass Carp. WOW!

YES, WE HAVE G. LOOMIS IN STOCK…….
Hi Friends,

What a start! We have been busier in the last 2 weeks than we have ever been. Seems that everybody already has a big dose of Spring Fever and looking forward to getting out on the water. Our rods, reels, lures, and line have literally been flying off the shelves.
This is our first newsletter of 2009, so we have lots of news and chatter to share with you. There is news regarding G. Loomis. We have some recommendations and reviews on Shimano, and some new information on Megabass. We also have another great story from our G. Loomis archives and some new pictures sent in by our great customers. So, let’s get started…

G. Loomis Deliveries Slow to 4 to 8 Weeks or More (But We Have It!)……..
Starting in October 2008 G. Loomis began a new quality control and production redesign program at their plant. A Great Idea except all at once deliveries of Rods basically Stopped. Not Good. We were originally told “two weeks” when enquiring about delivery, but that soon became “4 to 6 weeks” in December. Now we are told that “We should be back to Normal by April 1”. Hmmmmm, something about “Normal” and Aprils Fools Day that is very uncomfortable.

Our best guess is that deliveries and factory stocks will not be “normal” until June, if that. The “Pipeline” is very empty now with many popular rods back ordered in the hundreds of pieces. That back log won’t be filled anytime soon.
So what’s our point? Well, simply put we are still at a 95% to 96% IN STOCK LEVEL on all G. Loomis rods, reels, blanks, and accessories. So we DO have stock to fill your orders. BUT, if you are thinking about a new G. Loomis rod, reel, blank, or accessory now is the time to order to be sure you get what you want when you want it. And we still ship the SAME DAY – WORLDWIDE.
G. Loomis Escape Luggage….STILL at 2008 Prices (for now!)………..

Many of you will be taking fishing trips to WARM places in the next few weeks or months. Just a reminder that we have ALL G. Loomis ESCAPE Luggage and Tackle Bags IN STOCK. This is a Great Line of Travel Gear. Wonderful G. Loomis Design and Functionality. The Highest Quality (as you would expect) designed for the Fisherman. We are still offering every piece of Escape Luggage at the 2008 PRICES. Shipping is reasonable and all luggage comes with a 1 Year Warranty.

Oh, speaking of Escape Travel Gear don’t forget the NEW G. Loomis Escape Travel Rods. We are including a G. Loomis Rod Sock AND G. Loomis Hard Case with every Escape Travel Rod sold. Right now we have every rod made IN STOCK.
Shimano Sales Sky Rocket with 2009 Improvements……………

When Shimano introduced their new reels in July 2008 we were definitely impressed, but were uncertain how our customers would receive them. Well, that question has been answered very quickly. About as quickly as these reels are flying off the shelf! If you haven’t already take a hard look at the New Curado Baitcasting reels, the New Stella Saltwater Spinning Reels, and the New Saragosa-F Saltwater Spinning Reels. Absolutely wonderful reels. Truly State-of-the-Art!
We have also had phenomenal activity with the Tiagra Big Game reels, the Torsa and Trinidad lever drag conventional reels, and the Sustain FE and Stradic MgFB spinning reels.

And the rods? The new Cumara Split Grip Casting and Spinning rods are a WONDERFUL VALUE you need to take a look at. IM10 graphite, Fuji SiC Guides, Fuji Reel Seat, Lifetime Warranty, Light as a Feather. And priced between $220 and $240!! Wow!

Megabass Introduces New Rods and New Colors……………….

If there ever was a line that is hard to keep up with it is Megabass. They are constantly introducing new Lure Colors and now some New Rods. Listing everything that is new would cause this newsletter to expand 10 fold, so just take my word for it and look through our web site in Megabass for all the new items and colors. Our Megabass Rod Inventory is at an all time high and we’re sure you will find that “Legacy” rod you have been looking for.

Another Fishing Story from the G. LOOMIS ARCHIVES…………………..

In looking through the G. Loomis Archives we found the following story written by Steve Rajeff, Chief Rod Designer at G. Loomis. Steve’s credentials are substantial. He is the world casting champion in15 classes, has fished all over the world, and, simply put, is a Really Nice Guy. We hope you will enjoy this story…..

On Rod Design, Casting & Fishing Buddies

by Steve Rajeff (2002)

I’m one of the luckiest guys in the world. I get to design fly rods for a livelihood, and most fishing trips are business related. After all, I need to field test the designs, right? That’s the real payoff for having to sit at a computer and develop the designs and patterns. I’m in the factory on most days and I get to see if my latest samples have been produced. Once the sections have been fitted together, I conduct a series of flex and strength tests to confirm the design and obtain blank specifications of weight, tip, and butt diameters. Next, I’ll tape on some guides and a handle, then go right outside the factory and test them. Over 30 years as a tournament caster , guide, casting instructor and fly fisherman has helped me develop a fine tuned feel of how a rod performs, and how to make design adjustments.

If the rod needs a tweak, I’ll draw a new pattern, and have a new blank made right away and repeat the process until it casts just right. Here at G. Loomis I am encouraged to seek out the best materials in the world, and have full reign of the factory to make the best fly rods possible. In addition to my own sense of the rod design, I often use my brother Tim Rajeff for suggestions and evaluations, especially on two-hand fly rods. Tim developed and spent 7 years operating the Ponoi River Fishing Company on the Kola Peninsula in Russia, where Atlantic Salmon are plentiful and it is not uncommon to land over 12 fish a day. Two-hand rods were standard issue, and while fishing with some of the finest two-handed salmon anglers in the world, he picked up a few casting tricks. Tim set the National Two-Hand Distance fly record at 257 feet back in the 1980’s, when we were restricted to a 15-foot rod length. We are now allowed to use up to 17 feet, in line with international regulations, and I’ve bumped his record up to 295 feet with the new lines and rods.
Tim is no slouch as a single-hand caster either. I remember a float trip on the big Hole River, where David Decker was rowing and told me to cast the stonefly dry to the left bank about 60 feet away. I hit the bank, and the I saw Tim cast 5 feet further just downstream of my fly, from the back of the boat! The competition was on. I pulled out more line and beat him by 5 feet. We kept letting out line until we were both well into our backing trying to leapfrog the other bas to who had first water. It ended with a 100-foot plus hook up and a long line release of a merganser cruising up the bank feeding on the trout that were feeding on the stoneflies. Tim is a blast to be with and I’m luck to have him as a brother.
I am also excited to welcome Flip Pallot aboard. I first met Flip as one of the instructors at the Florida Keys  Outfitters Saltwater Flyfishing School 11 years ago, and I can say he is the consummate teacher and angler. If you have ever heard Flip speak on his program, Walker’s Cay Chronicles, you have just a taste of his amazing powers of observation of the natural world and ability to communicate with these insights. He once took me tarpon fishing deep into the Everglades. It was uncanny how he could spot one inch of the tip of a tarpon’s dorsal fin sticking up out of the water from 100 yards and know it wasn’t just a stick. He had me tie on a very small #2 pattern of his own design, rather than a typical 4/0 size tarpon fly popular then, and sure enough, the giant 100 pound tarpon scarffed it up. “Elephants like eating peanuts” he implied. He is full of great ideas for improving tackle, boats, trucks, barbecue sauce and your general attitude. I am really jazzed knowing we’ll be working on new rods and going fishing together.
I’m one of the luckiest guys in the world, and I’ll take luck over skill anytime!
