Staff Review on the New Shimano Chronarch Ci4+ Casting Reel

 

 

This is one of the most anticipated reel releases I can remember in recent history.  The new Shimano Chronarch Ci4+ was destined to turn heads.  After all, the Ci4 technology had been a huge success in the Stradic spinning reel and here was it’s big step into the casting reel market.  Now that we have gotten a fair chance to test these reels, here is my assessment of the new release from Shimano:

Construction:

As soon as you pick up this reel, it is obvious that the Ci4+ material translates very well into the casting reel platform.  The reel feels solid and powerful.  There is virtually no play at all in the handle and there is a fluid feeling with every crank.  Any time a new super lightweight reels comes to market, the concern is always that it will feel like a “toy” and not have the guts to withstand day after day abuse.  I am sincerely impressed with how solid this reel feels for only weight 6.5 ounces.

Ergonomics:

The new 150 size offers, in my opinion, the best of both worlds.  An angler can now have a reel that is roughly the same size as a 50 but have much more line capacity without sacrificing durability.  It is a slightly different shape but fits in your hand well and is incredibly easy to palm, a must for fishing all day long.  The larger paddle grips are comfortable and give a powerful feeling on the crank.  Definitely a good idea for Shimano to go with these over the standard grip.

Performance:

Here is the important part and what everyone wants to know:  How does this reel fish on the water?  Well, I can honestly say this reel has so far lived up to all the hype and anticipation.  Having the click adjustment on the side is very convenient for making small changes on the fly.  As far as casting is concerned, there is no question this reel flat out gets it done.  Seems like you can cast even the smallest of baits a country mile without backlashing.  It is extremely smooth and definitely gets an “A” grade in my book.
