Hi Folks,
Fall is here in Southern Indiana. The trees are starting to turn and the morning air is crisp and clear. It’s definitely my favorite time of the year. Absolutely beautiful.
It’s also a time of choices for most of us “outdoor types”. Deer season is open and this year looks like it will be a good one. No blue tongue disease this year. No drought. Crops are predicted to be at record levels and the deer I have seen are fat and healthy. And you know what that means, right? Corn fed deer!
Dixie and I got a bit carried away with our tomatoes, peppers, and some other garden plants last Spring. To date my wife of over 48 years has canned at least 75 quarts of various tomato concoctions. And we have lots of frozen and canned peppers along with 2 quarts of homemade tabasco pepper sauce (man, is it hot!). We will eat well this winter.
The deer enjoyed our garden as well with at least 10 tomato plants “sacrificed” to their appetites. Didn’t touch the peppers, but I had to get up every morning and fight them and the squirrels for the chestnuts that fell over the last three weeks from our tree. We had a real bumper crop – best in years.
Overall this was one of the best Summers I can remember. Not too hot, plenty of rain, and bumper crops for farmers and gardeners as well. But, like I said, now it’s all about choices.
When time permits I can be up in a tree stand before dawn on a cold morning hoping to get a chance at a nice buck or I can load up the boat and put in a local lake trying to keep my hands warm as I motor to a few prime holes known for some slab crappie or maybe a mess of sauger or a few largemouth bass. Might even try my hand at some channel cats if things get slow.
It’s times like this that I realize just how lucky all of us are to have the opportunity to hunt and fish that we have. Wherever you live in this great country there are so many choices for all of us “outdoor types”. Whether you live north, east, south, or west the great outdoors is there for all to enjoy.
This newsletter I’m keeping my ramblings short. It’s just too nice outside to be here behind my computer writing about what I should be out doing. So for this week I bid you adieu and hope to see you out on the water or in the field. You’ll know me; I’ll be the guy in the orange camo in the woods or with the G. Loomis jacket on in the boat. Just give me a wave and a smile. That way I’ll know you’re having as much fun as I am!
Thanks to all of our great friends and customers who have supported us and passed our name on to their friends. We know we are only here by making sure your needs are our first and only priority. Please let me know if we ever fail to meet and exceed your expectations.
Tight lines,
Tom Ashby
