Battle of the Topwater Walking Baits – Round 1
This matchup features in battle of power and finesse. The Rapala Skitter Walk is a bait will a loud rattle and an aggressive action. On the other hand, the Megabass Giant Dog-X is a quieter lure with a smooth, effortless walk. In order to determine a winner, we will divide the review into three different categories: Performance, Overall Quality, and Fish Catching Ability.
Performance

I’m sure a lot of you just assume that the Megabass would have been a clear cut winner, no questions asked. But, in doing this review, I was very impressed with the performance of the Rapala Skitter Walk. It is loud as all get out and has a really nice side to side action. When you get the right cadence, the Skitter Walk has an almost hypnotic sound that bass really seem to like. The Megabass Giant Dog on the other hand, has a more subtle sound and a seductive walk. It’s a unique bait that seems to have a knack for catching big fish. It’s not a great option on rough water but is a must have when the water is calm.
Advantage: Megabass Giant Dog-X
Overall Quality
There are no quality issues with either one of these baits. They both are a quality product. The Megabass Giant Dog-X will win this category for two different reasons. I cannot stand the hooks that Rapala puts on the Skitter Walk. I have had more hookup issues with them than any other topwater bait. It’s an easy fix but still a step I would prefer avoid. The other reason is due to the color selection. Megabass just has some incredible finishes on their baits and that is deserving of some praise.
Advantage: Megabass Giant Dog-X
Fish Catching Ability
I was really surprised as to how well the Rapala Skitter Walk caught fish. It’s a pretty plain bait that doesn’t “wow” you sitting on the shelf. That being said, it flat out catches bass and good ones too. Find the right group of people, and they will swear up and down that the Megabass Giant Dog-X is the best topwater out there. I can’t really argue with that logic.
Advantage: Draw
Winner: Megabass Giant Dog-X
And thus concludes the first match in the Battle of the Topwater Walking Baits. Be sure and stay tuned for the next first round match featuring the Jackall Bowstick vs. Paycheck Repo Man.
