Overview:
General Overview/First Impressions
- Sunline is our standard for a quality fishing line. We are huge fans of the SX1 and FX2 braided lines which they’ve offered for years now, so you can imagine how intrigued we were to hear that they were releasing a third braided line to their already impressive lineup.
- The technology used to produce this line is genuinely absurd. To put it into the simplest wording possible, Sunline uses a patented process which exposes the line to a multi-gas plasma which coats the fibers of the line to produce a single smooth layer. The pictures below, courtesy of Sunline America, visualize this process for you.
- Sunline is our standard for a quality line because they are more meticulous in their testing than any other brand we have used thus far. I will link their testing measures here but to summarize their findings, this “Plasma Rise” process results in a braided line which is more slick, abrasion resistant, water repellant, and holds its color better than any competing braided line.
- In my opinion, the most interesting test they ran on Xplasma was the water repellency test. The “Plasma Rise” coating makes it extremely difficult for water to penetrate into the actual fibers of the line as it can easily do with traditional braided line. For this test, they coated a piece of yarn using the aforementioned process and soaked it in water to see how much water it absorbed by mass. This was compared to a control piece of yarn which was untreated. Here is the graphic showing their findings after this experiment:
Applications/Recommended Gear
- There are three sizes of braided line I use; 12lb, 30lb, and 50lb test.
- 12lb Test
- I like to use 12lb test braid as a main line for any finesse spinning applications. I find that the 12lb Xplasma pairs nicely with 6lb test Shooter Fluorocarbon. The diameters pair up perfectly to tie your connection knot of choice.
- 30lb Test
- I like to use 30lb test braid as a main line (almost) any time I am throwing topwater poppers or walking baits. I connect my 30lb test braid to a short 13lb Shooter Defier Armilo leader. I like to run the Defier as a leader because it floats and has a bit of stretch to it, which is nice to have when you’re using treble hooks.
- Running braid to a leader is the move for topwater baits because it dramatically reduces the effort you need to put into working the bait.

- 50 lb Test
- Straight 50lb test braid is my first choice for throwing topwater frogs. It has a small enough diameter to cast a long ways if need be and a large enough diameter to offer
Final Thoughts
- Sunline put a TON of effort into developing this line. Spool some of this stuff up and take it to the lake to see what it’s really about.
