With the heat of summer gone and the fish moving back to the shallows there is no better time to put big numbers in your boat. There is one factor to your fall fishing that cannot be left out for success and that is the shad. Find the bait and you will find fish. Spend some time idling and eying shoreline for balls of bait and or fish busting the bait. Topwater really heats up this time of year and is my favorite way to catch them. Other great baits (like the Live Target baits) and shallow square billed crankbaits, spinnerbaits, rattle traps, buzzbaits and shakeyhead baits. If it looks like a Shad throw it! Let the wind sky conditions clarity and most importantly, the fish, tell you what to throw.
Most of the fish will be found shallow. The best places will be flats near backs of bays, secondary points and creek mouths. Try fan-casting your crankbaits around bait. Throw topwater lures and spinnerbaits above the fish and shakeys and jigs below the bait. Fish can be plucked from laydown limbs, rockpiles and grass. In the fall if it looks like it might hold fish it very well may. some of my top picks right now are megabass XPod and Dog X, war eagle spinnerbaits and buzzbaits, and megabass Vib-X.The days are getting shorter and the fishing is getting hot. Get out there every chance you can. Good luck and good fishing!
