User Question: I am in need of a rod and reel. I fish for Salmon in the Fraser River in British Columbia, Canada. I have been bottom bouncing in the river but have had limited success. I have been using a Fenwick rod and an ABU Garcia Ambassadeur 6501 reel. I have not been able to cast quite as far out as many of the others I fish with and have had limited success while everyone around me is limiting out. Many anglers have caught ten fish apiece while I am lucky to get a strike even though my line and bait are the same. I need an outfit that can cast out far and need the rod to be able to help me when setting a hook. I use a 3 oz. weight and since the Salmon range between 10 lb. and 40 lb. I use 40 test line. I want a G. Loomis rod and a Shimano reel. Could you please advise me as to the best setup?
Our Answer: The Fraser River in BC is a big fast river. It sounds like they are casting from the bank and bouncing along the river in a drifting motion, so you need a long, very strong rod. You will need to not only cast the weight of the lead, but the big baits or hardware that comes along with it. Also, when you hook up to these big, strong fish they will fight the current very hard. The rod needs to be a little stronger than normal. The Fraser needs a special rod that has a lot of backbone to do all these things. There are 2 models we recommend: The G. Loomis SAR1266C GL2 (11632-01) would be our first choice. It has a line rating of 15 lb to 40 lb. and a lure rating of 2 oz. to 10 oz. This rod may seem a little strong on paper but it will be the best rod to combat the Fraser. Our second choice would be the G. Loomis SAR1265C GL2 (10944-01), but this rod is much softer and even though may be better in a smaller river, it still may be a little under gunned on the Fraser.
- American Legacy carries a HUGE selection of G. Loomis GL2 rods in stock.
